    hi All
first time on this forum. looks great. i will get this out of the way, I am a nissan man and currently own a GU. However i am not a fan of the latest GU so to my question

I have the option of leasing a vehicle as part of my new job. A mate of mine has a 07 prado (D4D) and i am very impressed with both its on and off road capabilities.

what are the 4cy like in the long run for towing? (ie camper trailer/pop top caravans etc) i just have this thing in the back of my mind about 4cyl and longevity. maybe it is a flash back to the earlier 4cyl GU.
Thanks for any opinions and great site

    Hi Wilko

My first leased vehicle was the 3L TD 2004 model. Did 120000km over the three year lease, including towing a camper trailer. Never had a problem and motor and vehicle were still going like new.

Currently have an 2007 D4D on lease for 3 years and it tows the camper trailer even better....

There is a few threads with extensive information on towing and the different diesel engines, they would be a good place to start for a read

Are you mad!! *looks around nervously*... Be careful saying stuff like that around here..... 8)

I used to have an old 4cyl diesel Hilux. The difference from that to the Prado is like being on another planet. The D4D isn't the most powerful engine on the road but neither is it anywhere near lacking. I was initially very skeptical of a 4 cyl diesel too but lets just say that modern diesel technology has bought things a very long way. Like TP says there's some good threads about what some of the owners here tow with their Diesel Prado's. How long the engines eventually last is another question. I'm not sure they'd do the 400,000 my Hilux 3L motor did but I'm willing to be proved wrong.

Wilko, when leasing, the main issue (daylight should be 2nd) is whether you will get enough tradein resale to pay the balloon or residual. Prado will get this for you assuming you don't go any higher than 40% over 3 years or 30% over 4. A diesel will guarantee this while petrol should still be good.

YAY! Another pradopoint-er who does similar mileage to me.

If you don't mind me asking, did you end up selling the rig? Did you end up getting the 46% residual?

From reading numerous car magazines etc, the Prado generally has a 70% resale value (based on the purchase price after three years), which is very much on the upper scale of resale. I think only the BMW X5 was more (72%), whereas the average Commodore (which I currently own) as around the 46% mark.

                Cheers,

                    Hey Fungi

Sold it for around 70% purchase price (with options included) which meant on paper I got a tidy profit from the residual value.

                    Cheers

mate there was a pretty good post on this a little while back, i think it was called Auto vs Manual. it showed up some intresting things, for me anyway. i prefer manuals, but it seems the auto's are pretty shit hot off road, and well in trafic...can remember what the thread was called but it was a long one.

                      Cheers

After 2 years with my old prado, (petrol) I sold it for 85% of the purchase price (from new) so they hold their value pretty well

I'm talking about the percentage of the full cost of the lease. For example, if you financed $60,000 (including on roads), a 30% residual is $18,000. After 4 years and around 80,000km on the clock you'd expect the trade-in would be at least this. Using the Yahoo valuation guide you could expect $25-30k trade in on a 2004 model.

Don't listen to what others may be lucky enough to get back or what you see standing on the used car lots. Work your lease residual to easily cover what these online sites recommend as they have a high level of accuracy for the AVERAGE seller. For more accuracy go to Glasses site and pay $11. If you sell at a higher price, you are in front (remember any profit from the sale of a leased vehicle is subject to tax).

Not all leases are the same.

I am not an expert on leasing, though I do know a few things . I have a novated lease using salary sacrifice. I pay FBT all the way through, which is an attempt by the government to normalise the benefits of a salary sacrificed lease.

At the end of the lease, if I sell my vehicle for a profit, then the profit is all mine. If I sell it for a loss, then that's mine too. There is no tax component associated with the sale of my vehicle.

If you are unsure, check with your leasing company. They will know the conditions.
