  • GXL 150 First Mods

    Hi Guys,

Im sure this would have been asked before, just cant find the threads.

I am considering a new GXL Prado, with mods, will be my first 4X4 but not sure what mods to get first.

Have been thinking about bar, winch & recovery kit, snorkle and radio. Just looking to learn and do some basic offroad/sand stuff to start.

How does that sound to you more experienced offroaders?

    Cheers,

    Chris

Tyres before all then recovery gear and suspension, barwork and so on, have a search in the 150 section and have a look at the builds, plenty of information to go with.

    Welcome to the forum.

Suspension and tyres first. Maybe then bar, lights and UHF. If you're just getting into offloading then hopefully it will be awhile before you need a winch. Go a snatch strap first and travel with friends!

Depends on your budget, and how quickly you will get the mods done. It would be pointless to do suspension first then put bar work on in 2 months time only to need to redo the suspension. I have been driving around on stock suspension for 10 months now, with varying levels of bar work, until the mods were done and suspension can be done once right.

The Mrs has been driving around for 3 weeks now with bullbar, winch, side steps, kaymar, etc. all done on stock suspension. It handles like a damn boat and is severely under shocked, but hey, this time next week it will have all Caloffroad gear under it and hopefully ride like a dream!

Also depends on your use, the first thing I did was get rid of the grandcraps and put on Bridgestone tyres, picked the car up on Saturday and tyres were done Monday. A fully kitted bogged 4wd with no recovery gear will be a lot harder to recover than a bog stock 4wd with recovery gear, just think about that

Enjoy the 150, it more capable than most think while stock

The very first thing you do when going 4wdriving is reduce your tyre pressures, at the end of the day you need to re inflate them. A good tyre deflator, air pressure gauge and compressor really need to be the first thing on anyone's list if they intend to go offroad.

Beyond that go out and see what works and doesn't work for you!

          Cheers Andrew

If (like me) you intend doing a lot a beach/sand driving then I'd suggest you get a pair of maxtrax and as AJ said tyre deflator, air pressure gauge and compressor. I've had one of these DR Air Pro Flow 150's for a couple you years and so far it has exceeded my expectations (the previous very cheap one died within 12 months). http://www.motoquipe.com.au/buy/air-...4x4-off-r/4278

Yeah I would go a set of Maxtrax for your first recovery kit, everyone seems to recommend a snatch strap as the first thing to get, they are dangerous and most people don't really know how to use them safely, also they require a second vehicle. Maxtrax are much more user friendly, safer and you are self sufficient and not relying on others.

              Cheers Andrew

As AJ said if you're doing a bit of beach driving them Maxtrax are the go. After you buy a tyre deflator and compressor, as you will need to let your tyres down and then pump them back up.
And a long handled shovel from bunnings too

My first mod was a bull bar as I had a 1400km drive home after picking it up and I did the suspension after the first 12 months of ownership.

i have started in this order.
                    Compressor, deflators and pressure gauge.
                    recovery point front and rear
                    snatchstrap
                    Maxtrax.
                    UHF
+ some other bits and pieces
Was going to start a build thread but i take to long to decide on things and it could be the longest slowest build in history

As most of the other above have said, it really comes down to your intended use. Planning long desert trips in the middle of the year? You'll most likely never unpack your Maxtrax but you'll be glad you did suspension, tyres, bulbar and lights but if its beach and muddy forests you're heading for then Maxtrax and snatch strap are the way to go. I agree tyre pressures are very important wherever you end up!
