My neighbour has a 150 GXL for touring with a large camper van or his 6mt glass boat. He did the same thing and removed the stock tanks and replaced them both with larger tanks for when going to NT.

I totally understand the duel tanks setup for long remote trips and are all for it if you do this type of holidaying. But how many Prado owners truly really requires this setup? Like I said. there is nothing wrong with filling up on holidays in town instead of waiting to get home to save a few $$'s

If you're loaded up for that sort of trip, I recon you'd struggle to notice the extra fuel. Is The city the difference would be marginal at best. No different to having another person in the car.

really ? so you don't notice any difference in fuel usage when you add heaps of accessories like bulbar, roofrack, dual batteries and fridge ? they all weigh a fair bit, just like 150Ls of fuel.

The frontal area and the streamline shape of an object has a more detrimental effect on fuel economy than weight. Once you are cruising, the bits hanging off the Prado has more effect on fuel economy. In stop start traffic, weight has more bearing than the external bits.

As amts has said it all depends on speed. Getting the weight up to speed costs fuel but at stable speed not so much. Wind resistance increases fuel usage as speed rises. Another item often overlooked with regards to fuel are tyres. Increasing diameter usually means increased fuel consumption because rotating weight goes up, and likely tread pattern is more aggressive and not so eco friendly rolling.

This whole thing as said is horses for courses, guys like Evitoy sees value in leather seats and a moon roof and no value in large fuel tanks. People like me see leather seats and a moon roof as huge negatives and the extra fuel capacity as a major bonus. That doesn't make either of us right or wrong, just different.

Personally I have travelled places where even with the 2 tanks it's not enough capacity to get from one fuel outlet to the next, I have also on occasions saved as much as 50cents a litre by not "needing" to buy fuel until the next major town.

                  Cheers Andrew

Perhaps I should qualify a little further by adding: "relative to the additional usage as a result of being loaded up including accessories etc)

I pick up my new altitude tomorrow. My is a loose word more of the missus 7 seater kid carriage mobile. Never had a Toyota before but bought based on Toyota resale value as it is likely we will sell this in 3/4 years before embarking on a lap around Aust, so as we need to fit the 7 seat option and have good resale value this seemed to fit. Went the Altitude due to the extras over the GXL. If we were taking the prado on the lap I would have went GXL over altitude for tank capacity although I think you could get around it with rear bar and tanks but would cost more $. The leather, DVD player & sat nav appealed to us with young kids over the tank range, especially when we only travel about 10,000kms a year in the kid mobile.

Nice one Carlyle, what colour did you get?. I hope you enjoy the truck as much as we have so far. Those little extra touches does make a different in comfort for adults AND the KIDS on those long trips

Since I took ownership of ours we have clocked up 8000km in 4months and I have another 1500km holiday coming up in Easter. Might book it in for the 10k service before we go

Thanks evltoy, we got Graphite wife originally wanted black but they had this in stock plus a little easier to keep clean. The graphite matches the rims really well. Lovely car to drive the kids love it as well.
