I'm not in the market and I usually avoid the first run of new mechanicals but I think the 2.8 will be a better engine than the 3.0. Only time will tell but both are covered by the same warranty.

While it's toyota, I would never personally buy the first iteration of a new model of any car unless they've been proven elsewhere, not if I intended on keeping it past the warranty. Smaller engine, better economy, more power, better gearbox all look good on paper, and I don't know how you'd particularly go wrong (mind the pun) but I'd prefer the devil I knew - at a runout cost.
That said, it's a gamble. I sold my previous car ASAP because of km's but also because I knew the new facelift would decrease the value dramatically.
