  • Buying a Prado. Need guru advice.

Hi all. Buying a Prado and have found for the dollars I want to spend a few 2003 model GXL with under 100k, quite a few 2004 GXL with 120ish or later models 05-07 with 140-150 on the clock. I am thinking about trying to get a 5sp auto so sept 04 on. What are people's thoughts. Also where do they crack and are certain year models more prevalent. Does anyone have some picks.

Is the 5speed auto a better box? Is a newer car more important than lower Ks

Yes the 5 speed is quite a bit better.

Newer car Vs lower Kms is always a difficult one, personally I would give a bit more weight to low Kms rather than age, but it's really a case by case thing.

V6 Prado's crack the chassis around the engine mounts occasionally, worth checking that thouroughly.

      Cheers Andrew

Shop around. A lot. Especially since you're in NSW. I would venture that it will be difficult to get a vehicle that age with low kilometers on it but you could get lucky.

The condition and service history is the critical thing, rather than an arbitrary decision between age versus mileage.

Be wary of old vehicles with very low mileage . Movement is not always the enemy of a vehicle . Sitting still for too long can be .

I purchased a Grande 2007 Model with 190,000 Ks few days ago for 20,000. The car was in top condition but for leather wear on seats. Few years ago i would have been worried about K's, but now understand that its the Years, Use and services which are more important than the Kms. Time will tell if this was a good decision, also influencing was my use which is more as a weekend car and for longer trips rather than daily use.

                    Hi all,

If you were to do it again, would you go and get the higher spec'd vehicles or go for a lower one and upgrade with aftermarket accessories? I'm looking to get a new prado and wondering if a GXL is worth the extra $$ over a GX.

Is it harder to lift and modify a Grande than a VX or GXL. Does the 4 V6 have a timing belt and if so at what Kms does it need to be replaced?

Grandes are easy to lift (just has more electrical Gizmos than a VX). Have to trick the airbag height sensors with spacers. The rear side curtain airbag is one downside over a GXL. If you go down the path of manufactured drawers inc cargo barrier this is something to be aware of but just more of a hassle I guess. Sidesteps another, but I believe TJM (or Ironman) have theirs certified for specific airbag models.

I wouldn't have a Gande if they were giving them away, too much useless stuff that I wouldn't want. If I had my time over I would consider a GX instead of my GXL, if I bought a 150 I definitely would go the GX.
