  • Close to Ordering GXL D4D

    Evening All,

New to the forum and haven't posted for a while. Just spent the last few weeks looking around at the new Prado and Pajero. I've got what I think is a great deal so I might be ordering my new Prado this week. I've got the dealer down to just under $59k and that includes the GXL D4D, Bullbar, Towbar, Snorkel, Electronic Rust, Prado Floor mats, FULL 180L Diesel in Silver paint. I know I have a good deal as I've had 3 dealers call me back and advise they can't do that price and they'd have to let me go so I figure I'm about where I need to be.
I currently have a NP Pajero, great vehicle and Mitsubishi also want my business. The problem that I have is both vehicles are very good, both have features that the others don't have so I've got a tough decision to make. I have driven both with the wife, she likes both and overall they are very close in specifications and creature comforts. I've looked at the resale, not much difference. I will be leasing what ever vehicle I purchase over 3 years. I will be using the vehicle for mostly city driving and when we go away I tow a Goldstream Storm Pop-Up what weighs about 1.5-2.0 tonne. Prado is about $3k more than the Pajero.
Without starting a Pajero v's Prado debate (not my intention here) do any of you have any advice or suggestions on what vehicles is preferred and why?

Sorry for the long post, thanks for your feedback.

I think you will get a lot more than the 3 grand differnece back come resale Time!! i also found the Pajero a lot rougher in ride, a lot noiser and the fact that they are still selling 07 models now discounted in queensland is bit scary. You can buy a diesel for $49990 VRX.
The only down side to the prado deisel is that it normally is a long wait, to me that is a good thing, means they are selling them.
Did i mention the 180lt tank, i love that.

Pajero vs Prado has been covered a number of times.

It would be best to use the search button to dig out the last threads. They contain stacks of information.

Pajero is great if you dont mind the noise and bad resale value. BUt I'll let you read the threads you find, theres heaps more info in there.

prado is a much better vehicle offroad, more rear wheel travel, d4d has more torque and greater touring range, would definately go prado over deathstar.
had an 03 gx 120 with some gear now got a 2013 bt 50 GT auto some ARB gear.

The pajero's have traction control standard don't they? So depending on what model prado you get this may not always be the case, depending on the environment of course.

Yes, the Pajero has TC as standard plus stability control etc. They have also thrown in the family pack (rear mounted DVD, reversing sensors, side and curtain airbags and climate dual aircon). Although these are nice to have features they aren't really going to sway my decision because afterall these don't make the car what it is. The reason that it is a hard decision is because I have driven both, the Pajero is a lot quieter than it used to be, still not as quiet as the Prado. Both vehicles drive well and I thought the misses would have made the decision easy by just saying she preferred one over the other, but no she liked both. I'll just have to way it all up, take both for another drive and then see what I come up with.

Hi Paj348 - Ihave just picked up a new 08 Model GXL with Option Pack 1, auto and absolutely love it. Can't bet it from a newbie Prado owner's prospective.

One thing that is a must when you finally get around to purchasing the Prado is a change of nickname - Maybe PRA348 is an option?

              Good luck

If you are looking at leasing the vehicle, I would let the Lease company get you a better price.

                    I have ordered a D4D GXL 6sp White with:
                    -Sovereign Bullbar
                    -Towbar
                    -Rear Park Sensors
                    -Option Pack 1 (Airbags)
                    -IPF 900XS spotties
                    -Safari Snorkel

My price is not much over 58k. Lease price of course. Just a thought. Might help sway you this side of the fence.

I am seeing very bad interest rates from lease companies which specialise in salary sacrifice/novated lease deals. They may get the purchase price down somewhat but the ongoing charges are hundreds of dollars per month more than getting finance through other channels. In my case the difference between our company's preferred financer and what I can get is $650/m over 4 years! But they can get the Prado of choice for $3.5k less than I can which is no real deal.

And the other catch to leasing is that people usually lease on road costs and taxes which add $6-$9k to the price and contributes to a much higher residual. When Toyota and others claim that Prados are worth 50%+ of purchase price after 3 years, this is based on the book price not inclusive of any on-road costs. Be careful and do your maths with your head, not your heart.

Whiteman, you are correct in what you are saying. I did all my homework and went through my own leasing company. Although I am limited to who I go through but I have a choice of about seven. When I asked them to get a price for a vehicle for me they didn't do a bad job, I only manged to get about $800 off their price.
My lease is as you have mentioned, I pay for all my maintanence and on goings costs through my lease but these costs are separated from my actual lease costs.

                          Some quandary paj,

Whats your economy in the Pajero? Understand it is a nice vehicle from all reports, but i think the dual tanks in the Prado are a winner, especially if doing some long touring.

Sounds like the lease 'purchase' is the way to go :!:

Mine was on a lease. 6.5% and no residual (Higher monthly payments).
                            I paid 68k for a Grande.

I'm in a similar situation as paj348 except I'm probably not going to do the leasing thing - just going to buy privately.

I've looked through the past threads about price but a lot of the comments seem to be based on fleet pricing or some other special discounting.

So, can I ask what people would think is a fair price for a GXL D4D with just a few basic additions like the option pack with DAT stuff, and a towbar ... ?

It seems like RRP would be about $62-64k on the road. I've always worked on 15% discount as a target which should put the price back at $55-56k. Is this a fair target or, given the popularity and scarcity of the D4D, should I be expecting to pay more?
