  • Thoughts on these Prado 120s

Firstly a little background. First time poster on here. Currently have a 98 Nissan Patrol with a cracked head and i am looking for a good well reputed 4wd to replace it and the Toyota Prados have always been on my radar. So I've done some searching locally and have found these two Prados within 20min drive of Wallsend, NSW.

As I haven't purchased or looked at Prados before I was hoping some gurus on here could give me some assistance with them and what to look out for. I guess I would like a Prado with some mods done to it already to make things easier for myself and my fiancée, we are currently saving for a wedding and building a house in the next few months so will be adding to the house loan for the new 4wd

The 08 GXL would be worth a look and has a few extras on it. I wouldn't go for anything earlier myself but everyone's different.

The 1st 3 are powered by the 1KZ motor, which maybe considered a little under powered and use a little more fuel, but are perceived as a reliable motor, with the occasional head problem [but more so with the older 90s rather than these 120s], injectors are substantially cheaper when changed. I have this model in manual and have been extremely happy with it, it sits on 100km easy but any thing over 110km and the fuel use goes out the window, but pulls up hills great. Recently I upgraded to a 1300kg off road van after having a camper before and find although it tows ok it can be found wanting more berries, there are fixes out there including chips and exhausts but I have resisted so far as I may upgrade to a newer model.
The last 2 are the later D4D motors which will give you more power but have been known to have injector issues, which has lead to engine failure. Injectors are dearer but if the preventative maintenance is managed then they will be ok.
Just be aware the 4th example is advertised as a 8 seat gx but in fact it is a base model standard which was only a 5 seater.
You should study this forum as every thing about these 2 models will have been covered.
Which ever you buy you are getting a great 4wd. Good luck

I have just brought a 07 VX D4D the D4D is know for the injector problems if you buy a D4D model code KDJ120 just make sure they have had the injectors replaced like mine did onl had mine 6 weeks but love the economy of the D4D. my mum also has the 1KZ model code KZJ120 and there a good bus easier to work on the motor not as much electrics but does not have the same power and is a bit heavier on diesel.

The black KZ looks the goods, lots of fruity extras which is worth bundle if you were going to do those mods yourself.

I just got myself a 2003 GXL KZ, was considering a 2005 GX but the thing that deterred me was the lack of cruise control and more importantly the lack of ABS on the GX (unless they paid for this as an upgrade it wasn't standard, though not sure about later models).
Good luck with your purchase, there are some nice cars there to choose from.
2003 1kz-te, mud-terrain, winch bar, winch, hayman reece, roof cage, spotlights, light bar, reverse led lights, GME TX3100, Wind Booster, dual batteries, side awning, snorkel and soon to come a 2" lift.
