  • New Prado Buy and Inclusions

Folks, I'm about to put out my tender request out to dealers on a new 150 GXL and I just wanted to hear from anyone, opinions on what the best strategy is with regards to ARB kit and other stuff like BFGs. Ie: will Toyota dealers arrange ARB kit as part of the overall deal? Do the dealers get a better deal than I would (after taking into account the luxury tax threshold) ? Is this worth doing? Or should I only go for the Toyota extras on the initial buy, then do the aftermarket buy layer? Any help would be appreciated. Looking forward to starting my build thread!

    Often wondered this myself!

If you include the accessories in the initial purchase price, you get lumped with the LCT for the entire amount. Best to negotiate a Prado only price that is under the LCT threshold and then a separate invoice for the accessories.

Some dealers may not necessarily pass on the savings. You can only ask and shop around. Do your homework first before hitting up the dealer for prices. Then you will know if you are better off getting the dealer to organise the install or you do it after.

I was told, by the dealer, to do the accessories as a separate invoice to avoid LCT issues.

Given my time again, I wouldn't have the dealer organise the Bull-bar...it cost me about 30% more for them to do the job.
I would however, have them swap the tyres over, expect about $100 (unless you're a better haggler than a mate of mine) per corner for the Grandtreks, saving you $500 on the new tyres

If its a personal use vehicle, get it with nothing and screw them down for the best drive away deal you can. Shop around yourself for accessories. Thats what I did and saved a bundle on stuff I reckon. I know its a different vehicle but a bloke I know bought a Jeep and got the dealer to organise the accessories (ie BB, Tow Bar, cargo barrier etc). Got absolutely taken to the cleaners in my opinion. In any case, all the best with it.

Thanks for all the replies and advice guys. I'm leaning towards haggling the truck and Toyota bits first and doing the after market buy afterwards. Cheers.

If/when you do the aftermarket buy, if you can get it all done at once. Use one place and get them to do the whole lot, usually they will be more willing to give a bigger discount if more stuff is being done.

In my case, I was better off bundling everything into the purchase price. Though, it took quite a lot of effort to put a spreadsheet together and get quotes from the dealers and taking into account taxation and leasing considerations. Then comparing that figure with the one that I could get bundled from Toyota. What I found was that the prices Toyota were getting from ARB were substantially better than I could get. Though, ymmv - it depends how much business the dealership puts through ARB.

I had to babysit the project all the way through the process, so this required quite a lot of hands-on. Even then, there were a few minor stuff-ups. I caught one issue before it was too much of a problem, and the other had to do with them not fitting the recovery points before putting on the bullbar (long-story short).

At the end of the day, I enjoyed being part of the process and visiting ARB and Toyota as the build-up was occurring. They all got used to the sight of me during the early days. I saved a few dollars along the way, but my hourly rate would have been lousy .

If you treat it like a hobbyist, then the effort is well worth it, imho.

Hi, Do you know there is a new diesel being released in the Prado in Aug 15, this may add to your bargaining power or wait out till then. Suppose to be more powerful.

It will also depend on the dealer, the monopolising dealership here stated that they will also put there cut onto any aftermarket products added prior to delivery. Given your in Brissy you shouldn't have that issue!!

That's fine if you are paying cash (you'll also save stamp duty too)... if you're getting a loan or a lease, you'll need to have it all on one invoice.

Speak to Private Fleet too - www.privatefleet.com.au - and see what they can do. They get cost price on accessories

If you are going to lease then also look at Toyota's own leasing division. Their pricing for me was way better than the usual suspects. I fitted out the 150 until the LCT started being silly then paid cash for the rest. Pricing was about the same. Worth getting pricing up front too before getting an all inclusive price so you know if you are being fleeced by the dealer.

But was that subject to conditions on the purchase? I know they advertise their '1% finance' deals from time to time but I believe it's dependent on paying full whack for the car?

The price was as good as any I was offered and certainly not full retail. It was Toyota Fleet lease not Toyota finance.
