We would have loved to have bought a GXL, but for the recent year and low kms that we were after, a GXL was out of out price range. We consider that we got a good deal in the end

I would definitley buy another Grande and diesel D4D i just love everything about it.
If i was only going around town and short country trips i would have a petrol because of fuel costs but the diesel with its extra range suits my aplication perfect.

            change models

            Hi All,

I think my D4D is Fantastic, but after years of being a manual driver, im still coming to terms with this Auto thingy, great on the road but going down slippery hills i must admit i prefer the manual box, if i had my choice again i think i would opt for the 6 speed manual.

              well

Don't even know what model mine is..GX, GXL whatever, how do you tell? It is.....a 2004 TD intercooled auto with bullbar and towbar.....at 29k with 84k on the clock I think should be more than happy with my pre D4D Prado. Probably cost me a lot to change over a D4D. Seems a bit anaemic on hills even compared to the Rodeo but maybe I need to push it more.

The price of diesel is outrageous and yet there seems to be no community outcry. The cost of diesel affects the price of food even more than petrol due to increased farming and transport costs.

How could diesel outstrip petrol to the ridiculous point it has reached now. used to be cheaper but as soon as people started using diesels more the price has rocketed. Some places is 35c a litre more expensive. the Prado is not exactly economical to run either.

I can get a lot more range out of my TD Rodeo than i can with the Prado...and it isn't too bad a truck.

Also put my Falcon on autogas......which has worked out well.....much cheaper to run and very smooth on gas.

The Prado might have to be put in the shed at this rate as diesel goes through the roof. It is nice and comfy though, well built, quiet and nice high-up view but requires cautious driving due to high CofG and weight. Certainly has a presence on the road.

i would have liked the next model up from the gxl as you then get a comfy drivers seat. The seat is terrible after a few hours. My falcon had a much better seat.

I have the "old" 3lTD in manual GXL guise.

Very happy. The only things I would long for would be the traction control like the grande.. Very smart. after seeing one really work up a snotty hill opens your eyes. And a bit more power, but for most part, I wouldnt use it.
I have a roadbike with almost 200 HP and a limited top speed of 300K's.
I will never get the rush like that in the prado even if it had a LC200 V8D4Dwith a chip and turbo hyperdrive. So Im happy.

My first diesel, 3 yrs old now and Im a different driver because of it. I dont venture near the redline now. no need. tooooooouuuuuuuuque.
Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Somebody forgot the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water.

I've got the old 3ltr diesel GXL in the auto. There's only 2 things that are mildly annoying.
                      1. The auto doesn't get low enough when going down steep descents. Would prefer a manual, but for now I can use my improvised down hill descent control - aka, the brake.
                      2. Not enough guts when wanting to overtake (I know, the usual). I've now learn't to live with this annoyance. After coming from a subaru, I've got to realise I'm now driving a truck.

After looking at the '08 D4D GXL with bullbar, towpack and tinted windows, it was going to cost me $64,900 drive away, but only $43,500 for my '04 GXL with 87,000 km's on it. 19 grand in the sky rocket straight up, but of course not as much for a trade-in in 4 yrs time.

If someone nice gave me an '08 Grande, petrol, auto (with downhill descent) in jet black, I wouldn't say no. :P Oh, and a petrol card...

Actually, its been a week since I put that last post up and I've been thinking about it a bit...
Sure, if we all had heaps of $$$ we'd probably all get the latest model with all the bells and whistles etc, etc. But seeing I probably didn't answer the question in the first place I will now.
As I said before I own a 2004 GXL 3.0 T/D, it's definately the best car I've ever owned and thats because I've been able to modify it and get out into places not many others could dream of (present company excluded :P ).
So if I had my time over I think I'd go for a cheap and reliable 2nd hand 90 series T.Diesel and do it up. I think we can all say that we derive so much pride and enjoyment from doing the mods ourselves and then putting them to the test and this would allow for just that.
BTW, a cousin of mine has a Toyota dealership here and we took a new 200 series ($80,000) for a thrash today... awesome. But with a twin turbo V8 diesel how could it not be? But the question is, would I be any happier with one in my driveway? Not really...

I have a 4lt V6 and I averaged 12.5 lts/100kms at my last fill up. I did 1311 kms and used 165 litres of petrol. I could not be happier. A diesel Prado would have cost me about $5000 more and with fuel prises it would take me a long time to catch up. The V6 is very powerful and smooth and if you drive it reasonably it will be economical.

When we decided on a Prado we were after a white D4D manual GXL with option pack to replace the 90 series GXL manual. Nothing around without an order (no surprises there). But there was a silver D4D GX with both option packs in stock, probably cancelled order, I never bothered to ask. Close enough. Needs a stereo upgrade with reversing camera and it would be nice if it had better front seats. Otherwise very happy indeed. Exceptionally good value for money. Costed a VX but $ for $ the dead cow and trinkets weren't enough for us to consider going that way. The money was spent on alloys, tyres, lift, snorkel, barwork, dual battery and so on. Reversing sensors though are a waste of time.

Auto this time (because of Toyota's policy on safety packs) and I like it!
