    The third row of seating is important to me with 4 kids. Initially there looked to be good room in the 3rd row however thats comes at the expense of the 2nd row, i do like the adjustable lenght of 2nd row. My biggest concern was that in the GXL there appeared to be no way of closing the tailgate from the inside. The crusade comes with auto tailgate but not the gxl. With many kid drop offs this is a pretty big deal for me as mum or dad would have to get out to close the door every time!
    I looked at the everest soon after and even it had a handle to pull the tailgate shut.
    As previously stated a few things about the cabin felt cheap and i think the finish could have been better. It is well priced though and generally a great looking car.
    Having looked at the everest as well today, i think it looked a lot better and had better options, however you pay for it.
    For a seven seater 4wd, i think its still worth the extra money going with a Prado
    Austin, may I point one observation I made regarding the Everest, particularly if the seats to rear are being used.
    It appears the Everest has been made for the Left hand drive markets in mind as the middle row seat is a 1/3rd 2/3rd split with the 1/3rd seat sliding forward to gain access to the rear but it is located on the right side [drive side] meaning access is via the road side, not real safe with kids.
    New 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
    Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
    before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear

      So I had a quick look at, and a quick test drive of the Fortuner this morning. We also looked at and took an FJ Cruiser for a drive as both are on our list of possible replacements for the missus Rav.

      Styling wise the Fortuner is one of the least ugly of the new SUV's on the market IMO, put a bullbar on it to get rid of the horrible front bumper and I am sure the looks could grow on me.

      We drove the FJ frist which obviously has the V6 and then the 2.8 Diesel in the Fortuner. We both liked the FJ although sitting in it is very different to most cars. However for me the Diesel in the Fortuner was just so much more driveable. For all that everyone raves about the V6 power I didn't think it was anything to write home about, and the 2.8 had plenty of go and the power seemed to be in the right place, it was effortless up to 110kms/hr.

      The ride in the Fortuner was maybe not quite as refined as you might expect, the FJ had a smoother ride, but booth were more than acceptable.

      The biggest disappointment with both of them, and also the Kluger which we looked at but didn't drive was the cargo area. We can put our daughters wheel chair into the back of our Rav fully assembled, just pick it up and put it in, no problems at all. With the FJ, Fortuner and the Kluger we had to completely collapse and disassemble it in order for it to fit in. The FJ left the most usable space with the wheel chair folded up and inside.

      Probably more confused about what to buy now then before we went looking At least we have a few months to keep looking around.

      Cheers Andrew

        Yeah the V6 is nice, but both the 3 and 2.8 make three to four times more power at 1500rpm then the V6, hence why they hall ass up to the legal speed limits.

          Nice try, but I think you need to reassess your "three to four times" statement;

          1GR-FE (179kW version) develops 48kW and 303Nm at 1500rpm

          1KD-FTV develops 55kW and 340Nm at 1500rpm

          I'll be more than happy to line you up and watch you disappear in my rear view mirror as your 1KD-FTV flatlines at 3000rpm....and blows a hole in a piston!

            A 1kd surely aint going to blow a hole in the piston. I know that for sure. I've seen these things run 70 psi of boost with stock internals. Mine ran 32 psi no holes in piston.

              It's not the boost that does the damage, it's the injectors, see here;

                They have had injector issues but when we're talking the boost i mentioned. The injectors aren't standard nor is the fuel and ration pumps.
