  • Advice for a new prado owner

Firstly I would like to say what a great forum this is (Made only as good by the quality of the posters).

My family have just received our new Prado (GXL, Manual, Petrol) yesterday night. Love these 4WD's and it is our first new car. Have not had a good chance to look it over properly yet.

    Couple of quick questions:

    1. What is the best climbing gears in the new prados petrol/manual for longish sand hills where medium and sharp runups are required. In my forerunner it was always low range 4th , 3rd to 2nd depending on length of runnup, incline and length of hill etc. However every vehicle is different and I know the later Jackaroo's best climbing gears in this circumstance is in high range 4wd.

    2. Floor Mats. What would you all recommend as the nice looking floor mats that suit the Prado and that will trap most sand from getting onto the carpet. (We have two teenage kids and do lots of fishing and 4wding).

    3. Rear Diff Lock System (Genuine Toyota). Saw this in the owners manual on the way to work on the train, I may be blind but I don't think there was a switch near the steering column in my Prado and I can't recall this as an option on the Manual GXL?? Was this an option on Aust vehicles or does my vehicle have one and I am just blind??

Finally just a bit about me I am a qualified mechanic and have had a 4WD for about 14 years. First a S/H Landcruiser for about 3 years and then a s/h 1993 Forerunner Limited edition which we had for 11 years. What a great vehicle only one major prob I blew the transfer box at 105000 kms (Toyota still paid half the repair cost even though it was 1 year outside the warranty period). Must say I am very happy with Toyota and Toyota vehicles- they are built very well.

Our family does a lot of 4WDing mostly in the lower south west region of WA we lots of camping and fishing and have a large gruop of friends who all have 4wds with winches etc who love testing the metal of any 4wd. So am looking forward to giving the Prado its first real offroad run (After run-in of course).

    All the best

      Welcome Trublue

Definitely sandgrabbas for floor mats, they will cost you round the $220 mark for front and middle row mats and well worth the dollars.

As far as I am aware the Prado was not offered an option of diff lock ex factory on Australian models and most of the guys use the ARB diff lock system. I am sure you will find a wealth of knowledge from this forum and it is highly addictive once you start.
