I have a 2011 GXL D4D. From day one this car has been rock solid and I can't fault it. Its not a rocket but I've towed our 1 tonne camper on a 5000km trip in 40 degree heat and it has no skipped a beat averaging 12L\100km. We've clocked up 150K km now (I know it's a lot for a 2011 model) and I am about to bite the bullet and order the new 2.8. Hopefully the new engine is as good. I'm a bit hesitant but it needs to be done. Is the 2.8 better then the 3.0. Any thought would be appreciated.

Is there a problem with your Prado? It sounds like it is just fine.

This sounds more like a "want" than a "need"

Let me guess you use it for business? Apparently the 2.8l is better has 3% more power 127kw to 130kw and has gone from 420nm to 450nm so should be better. The engine has already been in use in the Asian region for awhile and there haven't been any reported issues there I don't believe.

I get mine tomorrow but I will be converting from a V6 4l so it will be a snail in comparison.

It will be interesting to read your observations on the difference, my previous and current Prados have been V6. For city driving (where mine spends most of it's life) I think the V6 works well. Sure the fuel economy isn't so great but then mine has only done 75,000kms in the 6 years it's been on the road (we are the 2nd owners).

I did 200,000kms in a v6 120, now have 2.8 with 4,000 kms under its belt. Yep its slower than the v6. In a race to 100kph, the v6 would dust it easily. But it tows the boat well, crises effortlessly at 100kph and sips compared the v6 heavy drinker. Horses for courses, I'm enjoying the diesel for now

What can I say. So far very impressed. Sure its definitely not as quick as the petrol but to try and compare when you put your foot down maybe 3/4 in the petrol thats max for the diesels acceleration equivalent. I did have an issue with a dry spyder joint on the drive shaft which made it seem clunky but thats it. Great on sand no performance issue there and I am getting about 11.5km/100 mostly city driving. If I go the freeway at 100km/h I am using only 7.5l/100km.

I am happy with the performance of my (very) new 2.8 auto, even comparing to a V6 Kluger. I have also noticed a slight jolt at times at low speeds and will get the grease points checked at the 1000km inspection.

Yeah will be picking it up on Wednesday. Its funny how different dealers can be treating customers. When your local one couldn't give you the time of day. You drive 30min down the road and the tow bar is $200 cheaper and they offered to swap my dual battery system over.
