  • Buying second hand, if this could be answered quickly I'd really appreciate it!

    Hi everyone

I'm looking at buying a second hand petrol 150 prado. It's got a little over 100k kms on the clock and it's from a private used car dealer. It was privately owned but for business purposes. It has a full service history except for the 50k service which is missing. But my main concern is that the 100k service was done at this private used car dealership. Would this worry any of you personally? I don't like the idea of a major service like the 100k being done at a dealer trying to sell it on.

Either way I'm going to be getting a vehicle inspection along with a mechanical inspection.

Any other advice is very much welcome.

    Thanks so much in advance

If it's only just past the 100K mark, check if the filter looks new and if the oil is still relatively new (hard to tell beyond a few hundred km). Ask your inspector to have a look for some evidence of the more obscure service items. My guess is that they would have done the cheapest option available, changing just the filter and oil, as opposed to the manufacturers handbook service.

If you're worried about it, factor the cost of the service into your purchase and get it done straight away.

Major services are 40,000km apart. 50 and 100 aren't major services.

If you do buy it, give it a major service like front & rear diff oils, transfer case, transmission fluid, apart from the obvious oil and filter. The radiator fluid can be left until 150K.

Brake fluid should be easy to check. Change if it has discoloured.

Very true! I should have led with that, but I was half asleep. Especially given that I just got reamed almost $400 by Toyota for a 100K oil change.

Yeah it was the first one off lease and last one before the warranty runs out, so I elected to get it done with the Toyota stamp in the book (resale value I guess). I assume it was the apprentice who did mine that day, because he sent it home without wiping down the oil filter surround and when it was parked at my house, a couple of hundred ml of black oil dripped all over the driveway.

                    Lesson learnt...

Guys this may be a silly question but would cars in Hobart be more rust prone as they're near the water there?

                      Thanks again!

About 15 years ago there was a sudden influx of 4WDs for sale in Melbourne with Queensland plates.

Rumour had it that Queenslanders knew they had been run along in the water along Fraser Island and other beaches and they were rust just waiting to appear.

I think Robe SA is the closest salt water to Victoria you can drive in.
