Swapping from Diesel to Petrol Prado

Hi all,

After much reasearch with biodiesel I am going to swap our 05 Diesel to 06 Petrol Prado and convert to gas. I am very sad about swapping our current Prado as I have just got everything right for travelling long distances with it and have done an extensive trips towing our van.
I only found Prado Point today and have gained confidence in converting to gas after reading threads posted about the subject by people who have been running for some time on gas.
My Question is there any things to look for when buying a second hand petrol Prado ?

Are you saying that you are swapping a diesel for a petrol, to allow you to convert to gas, so you can tow a caravan long distances :?: :?

I'm thinking stick with the diesel.
Gas is going to be hard to get when you are away from the burbs, the reduced petrol tank/range would be a pain in the bum, etc etc etc.

What dont you like about the diesel :?:

Nick, have you thought about chipping your diesel, then it would be a great tow vehicle with good economy and you won't have to sell and buy someone else's issue's, better the devil or car you know. Check out the diesel section as their is abit of info on this.

Hi Lofty

Travelling in Oz on both tanks will get you a lot further than a Ford Territory and Pajero which friends of ours and many people on the road are using.
I agree diesel is the way to go and we have covered a far bit of this country in the diesel Prado with no problems but filling the thing up is starting to hurt and will only get worse from here on end.

I refilled my Prado yesterday.. $310 :shock:

I hear pushbikes are cheap too run.. But I like my Prado.. 8) 8)

If you have a V6 Prado why wouldnt you think of convetrting to Gas. I like my Prado too but you couldnt be happy paying $310 to fill up

I am not happy with loosing a second fuel tank, loosing ground clearance, the reported fuel gauge problems and also, my dealer did not recommend fitting gas to my engine... I have a TD twin cab for running about town and too work. I own the Prado, so I don't freak out too often about the running costs.

I also tow a tool trailer for work and have looked at buying a second vehicle to drive for work when I have a perfectly good car sitting in the garage so I can look at it and think of the next special trip I am going to take in it .
The fuel Tank is being replaced with a gas tank and the ground clearance does not seem to be an issue going from what people have said in this forum.

Don't listen to the dealer...of course he would say that.

The local gas conversion guy around here has done heaps of diesel gas conversions...one guy i spoke to had his Patrol converted and couldn't be happier....saves heaps.

Thing to remember is it takes a little while for the conversion to settle down and for things to be sorted out...that is an annoying time...but after it is tuned in, runs like a charm.

Lot cheaper, but there is a bit less power with gas and you don't get as many kms per litre...but because of the price differential still a good saving in running cost.

Don't have to have a big round gas tank anymore they have some new designs which are more space efficient.

Go to someone who knows what they are doing and who people recommend...the franchise places are hopeless, quality is poor and they rip you off.

Look at it this way fellas, it may have cost you $310 to fill up but think about the poor sods who have a Falcon. My falcon averaged around 450 km per tank, tank was 69 litres. So it would cost $305 to travel 1170 kms.

Now imo the Prado is a damn brilliant car compared to the Falcon, far more space inside and a much nicer ride. I wager that most of you would get close to 1400 km on a petrol Prado on one 180 litre tank so you get to cover an extra 200 kms on a full tank compared to a Falcon.

Now compared to the diesel Prado the figures are to fill the tank $342 but I get a range just over 1800 kms. So for an extra $37 I get to travel nearly 650 kms more than the Falcon BA XT for 180 litres.

it's amazing how few people understand that comparison! the number of times i've had the "jeeeees that must hurt" comment from either the servo attendant or someone else who's close to the counter when i'm handing over $300 after filling up don't get it when i tell them their falcon/commodore uses just as much if not more only they fill up more often...
