i thought the diesel gas conversion gave more power and better economy? or were you referring to the petrol conversion?

Coverting to gas is fine now while gas is cheap but in a few years when the gas excise is increased as planned you'll be bleeding. Stick with the diesel.

I reckon the Petrol with Gas would be the go.

I reguarly pull under 12 l per 100 on the highway (v6) and constant 12-13.5 in the city.

A member I know on this forum had his V6 done with Gas and picked up 17 Kw at the wheels over stock!!!!!
Claims it was costing him about half to run as it did before.

I would take advantage of the cheap gas now and grab a V6. You'll be smiling ear to ear at the quietness and also the power !

Then in a few years if the excise hits gas, sell the thing off and grab the latest model prado that is due for release in about 2010. (And will look similar to a 200 series cruiser or Kluger shape.)

          yes

yes, sorry there, I thought of that late last night in bed...that I hadn't been clear...i was talking of the petrol gas conversion. The diesel gas conversion is a different kettle of fish...no direct experience of that one...but it is claimed to improve power and econmy but it would be a delicate balance between the cost ot filling 2 tanks...sounds good though...I am going to see what it would cost to do my Rodeo before fiddling with it on the prado......good test bed I reckon and doesn't owe me much. I'd hate to stuff up the prado.

I've read some good reports on the diesel/gas conversions ... apparently they qualify for the rebate too. Wonder if anyone has done a diesel/gas on a D4D?

I can't believe this is even being discussed.

I LOVE my diesel. You can't buy gas out whoop-whoop, and Prados are BUILT or long distance touring.

Sure diesel is expensive at the moment, but what do you think will happen to gas once everybody converts over?

With the diesel gas conversion I'm led to beleive that the engine does not run completely on gas, but has gas injected with the diesel. This enables the diesel to burn more efficiently and cleaner. Pretty sure there is only a small gas tank added so you may not lose both your tanks.

Another thing I'm not sure that you've thought about (but I'm sure you have) are the basic economics of what you're thinking of doing? How much will it cost you to upgrade to a petrol prado? Will there be a cost difference not in your favour? (Also taking into account the mods that you've done). The cost of getting the Petrol converted to gas if it isn't already?

Changing your car for a more fuel efficient option isn't always the most cost effective way to save money, infact sometimes it will cost you more if you don't keep the car for x amount of years.

                  Hi Crammy

Valid point and I have just swapped the vehicle over going from a 05 GX diesel with all the mods to a 06 GXL petrol with all the same mods excluding dual batteries and electric brake controller.

With the change over price and the gas unit around $4000(hopefully fitted in early October by the "The Gas Connetion" in Carrum Downs) with a $2000 rebate and the k's travelled it will take me about a year to recoup my money.
We travel north every year with the pop-top and travelling 1600 kms one way to get to our holiday destination and going by peoples economy with gas towing it will cost us half the price to get up there in fuel.

Having the V6 is a different car to drive than the diesel and so far I am impressed. The proof will be in the pudding when we run on gas .

Was very sad seeing the diesel go. What a car. Last long trip we did through the centre we did 13000 k's , did not let us down once (only the Knuckle head dealership who wired up the Piranha system had wired it to the coil system to charge the second battery. Lucky a mate was in South Oz who is an auto elec, took 45 mins to find the problem and 15 mins to get us back on track) we have high expectations with this one.

Well done nicko, it sounds like you're happy with the decision you've made so thats all that matters. I'm sure you'll be happy with the petrol. With the new SGI gas systems it'll be a winner.
