Is it possible to have this cake and it at the same time?

I agree Symo I felt the same with the 2.8 just took ages to get up to speed. Maybe the smooth 6 speed auto got something to do with it. There's no kick back.

How does the 3L sh%$ over the 2.8L? Even having come from the lighter 120 to heavier 150 that is now feeling run-in, I just don't see it.
    I disagree also.
I've driven them back to back several times and the only time that I felt the 3L was comparable was acceleration on the h'way. I have 8000km on the 2.8 now and it's starting to loosen up a bit, I have no issue with the power or the power delivery from standstill to 2,3 or 4th, it's only the h'way on occasion where I wouldn't mind a bit more poke.

Drove them back to back and the 2.8 takes for ever to wind up and seems to hang around the redline too long wasting time, both motors make the same power at the same rpm so there is no way it can do more work over the same amount of time.

The extra 40nm can't be felt, at all. And the dopey throttle response seems to be turbo driven waiting for the rubber band to wind up.

Maybe it's the new gearbox but the old 3L five speeds responds right away and really shoves you in the seat, I suspect the 450nm in the new only occurs over a narrow band were as the old 410nm is spread over 2000rpm with little drop off before and after.

Not an upgrade but a major side step. Not impressed.

Apparently yes as long as its for off roading only. I wouldn't be mucking with the EGR on this one as it could affect the DPF system and cause early failure due to excessive blockages.

How does 176kw and 608Nm of torque sound? You can get a tune done and this is the expected outcome.

The 2.8 seems to take for ever to wind up whereas the 3L seems to be looking for the next gear all the time.

There is some speculation that the new 1GD-FTV engine (GD=Global Diesel) is de-tuned to meet the tightest international emissions restrictions. This restricts the power delivery although the engine has the rated power and torque stated.
My hope is that a chip should fix this and then vehicle will be "normal" again with similar performance to the previous 3litre. But this adds almost $1,000 to the cost.

So overtaking would be done in 3rd and 4th and it copes well enough - about as quick as my 120 D4D used to, anyway. If towing and acceleration are the main criteria, then get the petrol.

I'll be getting a Roo Systems tune as soon as they are available and can report back if you haven't already purchased.
Thanks, I will be interested to know how it goes.
If I go diesel, I will probably get Chip Express ex. UK $678, as I have been happy with the one on my current car. It has a few power settings to experiment with.

    2.8 L Diesel Power question

    Hi,
I am looking a getting a new auto 4x4 and test drove the Fortuner and Prado 2.8 diesels on the weekend.
They are both great vehicles but I found them both a bit gutless in acceleration, particularly the Prado.
After some research, it seems that many owners think the new engine struggles, particularly in the 5th & 6th (overdrive) gears.
I have a 2008 Disciovery3 2.7 diesel, which was a bit the same when new, but a diesel chip gave it plenty of extra power & it cruises towing a camper in 6th no problems.
I want to ensure whatever new vehicle I get can similarly overtake quickly and accelerate when needed.

So, has anyone put a chip in the new Prado?
If so, did it help enough to make you happy when towing or accelerating generally?
Please don't answer if you just have an opinion about chips, as I would like to know from anyone who has actually done it on the new engines.
I will get the Prado petrol 4l if the diesel chip does not help give the diesel enough grunt.

    thanks,
