  • Advice on purchasing a used Prado

    Hi,

I'm new to Prados, converting from a Jeep.

I am wondering how to figure the price with lots of after market extras.

One vehicle I'm interested in is a 2010 GXL diesel auto, clean vehicle with about 150,000 kms. The guy says it has about $20,000 of extras which is probably correct. Lots of goodies from ARB and the seller used it on long trips with a camper trailer, which is what I want it for. Asking price is high $40,000s (almost 50k). One one hand, the extras are useful to me but are up to six years old with lots of use, on the other, they would be expensive to buy new.

    Your sage advice please???

    BTW, awesome forum.

    Thanks,
    Al

    Hi,

Redbook says its worth 30k - 33k. With 150000 kms on it Id say its at the bottom end. The accessories (in my opinion) only make it more desirable over a similar vehicle without the accessories. If they are of value to you then pay something for them as you only have to get them anyway but not retail value. I would have thought high 40k nearly 50k seems a bit over the top. I have a 2014 with many accessories, extended warranty and only 33000 kms I'd let go for only a bit more that that!!

I'd be making sure the service history is right up to date on a vehicle with 150000 kms on it for that money and make sure injectors have been replaced etc.

Thanks REN470, I take the same view about accessories but being new to Prado world thought I should check. The price does seem very high so I'll keep looking. Looking forward to the "Prado" chapter

I agree that seems very high. I bought my 2013 GX manual 4 months ago for $39500 with 56000km on the clock and it came with a bullbar and HID spotties. I think the high 40 grand mark is too steep, I feel like accessories depreciate quicker than the cars themselves.

For what its worth, I used Bid4U to find my Prado for me as they are very common as ex-mine cars so buying one can be a bit of a minefield if you don't know what to look out for (which I didn't). He found a ripper of a car and got me a bigger discount than his fees were so everybody won. He is Perth based but maybe look into something similar near you.

Prados seem to lose about $4-4500 a year in depreciation.

JMHO but better to buy a soccer mum car that's got a service history and low enough kms than a decked out 4wd. Of what I gather, any d4d with 120k+ should have had it's injectors replaced or you need to factor that into the cost.
