  • Second Hand Prado

    Hi All,

I am wanting to buy a second hand prado 2009 gxl 3.0l. I was told it was the last of the 120 series. Asking price is 35K with 100000Km on the Clock. This would be my first Prado owned and am wanting to have a camping and everyday car.
I have heard so many negatives with the D4D and am not sure if it is safe to purchase or not. The faults i have been told about are things like cracked dash board and rear door. glow plugs and the oil pick up screen. As i am not mechanically minded i would love some advice to which model and year is better or more reliable and is the 2009 series suspect to major faults.

I am wanting to go back to Toyota after my Rav4 has served me well. but not sure which is better and less hassle free. Any advice again very much appreciated.

Mine is a 2008 build and delivery.

Cracked dashboard probably depends if the vehicle is garaged or not. You should be able to tell by inspecting it. Ours has no cracks.

Rear door has not been an issue, but we have installed a rear carrier. Not many reports of cracks, but they do happen.

Oil pick up screen would be the main concern. Have it inspected by an independent diesel mech. There is one here on the board who should be able to help.

Fuel economy. I travel 100km per day to work and back.

The petrol will achieve pretty good fuel economy on the highway and the engine will be less hassle to maintain.
