  • 120/150 Diesel/Petrol Soccer Mom/Decked out

    Hi everybody,

First post and hopefully not the last !

Our family is looking for a 4WD who will take us to remote places although not hardcore like crossing rivers (YET ), take us to the sandy beaches, pull a tinny and (hopefully) a 16foot caravan while taking the family from point A to point B.

After much reading I am thinking that a prado will be a car that will serve us for years to come although I have read a lots of different opinions on the DIESEL vs PETROL and from what I understood petrol use more fuel but less maintenance and the diesel is prone to injector problems.
Is the injector problem mainly on the 120 or does it affect both lines or car?

Servicing wouldn't be an issue on the price as I have always serviced my car myself. Oil change, spark plugs, suspensions, brake pads change (every second brakes then I machine the discs), basically anything that is not overly complicated I would try to do it myself.

Our current budget is 35k to 40k aud on a novated lease we expect to cover a lot of km so the lease should work in our favor if we manage to negotiate the interest rate down.
We would either look at a 2008 Prado 120 VX decked out with ARB accessories or a 2010 Prado 150 gxl or vx with some good accessories but I am guessing it will be harder to find at this price point. Alternatively would a "soccer mom" car be a better option? I understand it would have done less km and less offroading but at the same time the accessories don't come cheap

What do you think I should do?

Try and find one with the accessories you need. The VX model is however not as common, so there is less choice out there.

I'm a petrol owner and I'm very happy with it maintenance, performance, reliability and running cost wise.

      Read my mind!

I'm in pretty much the same situation, but have decided on a diesel irrespective if I go 120 or 150 series ( provided the 120 is a D4-D). Most I'm finding have higher km on them, so I guess it comes down more to spec levels. Also, how much difference was there between the 120 and 150 series with regards to suspension differences, handling differences and specs...

Very curious to see what others think!
