  • 150 Kakadu radar cruise control - must have?

    Hi Prado Point,

First post and and hopefully going to own a Kakadu in the near future.

I was wondering if the radar cruise control is a must have or not really the end of the world. I am aware that the radar cruise is standard on post 2011 models but the earlier models it is an option.

In my search for a Kakadu many of the vehicles dont seam to mention it, is there any way to tell from pictures of the vehicle that it is fitted.

    TIA Graham and Amye

It is convenient *at times*, but yeah, it is not the end of the world.
I don't think you can tell from the outside. Radar unit is behind the Toyota logo, IIRC.
Could be wrong - I think it is part of safety pack? If the ad doesn't mention it then wouldn't have it.

The quickest way to tell is the steering wheel. There is an extra button on the right hand side that is easy to notice as it's quite large.

It is a bit clunky (brakes too hard and then is slow to reapply the accelerator) compared to the Subaru version called Eyesight. Unfortunately it has to be turned off every time the CC is turned on (not to be confused with activated).

Radar cruise control sensor is in the same camera for off-road driving. It's below the Toyota logo. It is sort of an overlook on the Toyota part. Only Toyota bulbar can properly accommodate it, but that bar is too low for anything more serious than driving over a curb and is not compatible with a winch. For all other bars you have to move the camera.

I have ARB bar, and the camera is moved up to the grill. Radar cruise control works, but the camera becomes pretty useless for off road.

As to the usefulness of radar cruise control - I like it a lot. It is a bit clunky, as GUV said, but you learn to use it - turn off before overtaking (otherwise when you close the distance between the car ahead of you it hits the brakes) and so on. Nice in the city - extra feature to help you not to bu,p the car ahead.

I have a 2009 model that is listed as having the "off-road pack" in the service booklet. I missed out on the radar cruise but did get the crawl control, multi-terrain select, and the rear diff lock so I'm happy.

Incorrect, the front view camera is for Multi Terrain Monitor only. The Radar sensor sits behind the Toyota Plastic logo in behind the grill. It looks like a square flat plate pointing forward. "Radar" uses millimetre RF waves which can't be produced from the camera.
