  • questions before buying

Hi everyone from a new member.
I have finally convinced the better half into buying a Prado, just looking for some advice on what to look for when purchasing I have noticed that most of the cars in our price range (30K) have about 100 000ks on them. Is there any major service costs or problems once they get to this point.

Hi Brodie, welcome to the forum, are you thinking petrol or diesel?

If you can get a D4D for around the $30k go for it - then let me know where!

But around that price I dare say it will only be the 1KZ TD engine - and the stats seem to show that with around only 2L/100km difference in consumption and twice as many servicing periods for the 1KZ there is little in savings over this engine and the 1GR petrol when all is taken into consideration.

brodie can you put your location in ya profile.
i have the 1KZ, and i was talking with samo last night,
and the question came up, what sort of mileage do i get.
12-14lt/100 i reakon (never checked fully) and samo reakons he's
            getting 13.
with this in mind and the cost of deisel currently alot dearer than petrol
            and the extra servicing,
i would have to jump ship to petrol, if i was starting out.
saying that, i towed my 2 tonne(loaded) trailer a while awhile ago,
            and didn't fell it there.
i have never towed my trailer with a 1GR, so unable to compare.
good luck with your decision, but you have chosen a good vehicle.
            now just which engine?

For $30k you would be looking at a 2003-2004 model possibly. Diesels have better towing capability and better fuel economy that Petrol, but considering the price difference between the two, there may be not much saving in dollar terms, but you will see the extended distance between fillups for sure.

I would get a qualified assessment of the cars condition before handing over the hard earned cash. A car with 100,000km on the dial is still relatively new and you may have to deal with major servicing that could be pricey.

Talk with Toyota about the service details and costs. They are the best people to tell you what to look for.

There is no major services around 100K mark. The timing belt is due at
150K. Spark plugs is due at 40K and 80K. Brakes might be due for
replacement. Other than that it should be pretty much it.
