  • protection options for new prado

Well i just signed the deal on my new 120 GXL Diesel Auto.

They then gave me a hole new bunch of things to think about, so i thought i would looked for some experienced opinions.

Here are the things i'm talking about:
    extended factory warranty (6yrs,100k) $1595
    small accident repair technology $1000
x-pack vehicle protection. paint, fabric, vinyl protection $2100
    window tint $595

My car will be parked on the street, so the ones i think i need are the window tint and possibly the paint protection if they will separate it out of the pack.
Seats ?, i may just try to pick up some spare covers to replace later.
Small accident, seems like a good deal for a car that will be parked on the street but would rather not spend the money.
Extended warranty ?, it's a Prado for god sake, what can go wrong ?????

Anyway, i would love to hear what people think, what you got, what you wish you had got.

    Thanks
    Kerry

ps. if anyone wants to know what deal i got $$ wise, just ask

You can always take up this option nearer to the end of your factory warranty if you feel the need

Save your money and use this money ($3000) towards upgraded suspension and a few other special extras (snorkel, better wheels?)

A window tint is a good idea - but IMHO this price is at least $200 too much. You could do much better privately.

When do you get the car and welcome to Pradopoint! 8)

ps. These 'special extras' really are just cream on the sale for the sales person. They really add to their commission on the sale. Smile and say 'no thanks'.

Extended warranty is good but is generally restricted to that dealership so you don't want to move too far away.

Paint protection...Don't even bother. It is no different to waxing your car. After all, if you have metallic paint, there is a clear coat for that reason. To bring up the shine but more importantly to protect the paint. Purchase a good quality wax and enjoy a a nice sunny day in the shade applying it.

Scotch guard is a waste of time. You cannot cover all surfaces evenly, it wears where you sit, allowing grime to penetrate the material. As a result, it's hard to steam clean because there is residual scotch guard on the rest of the material. Just get seat covers.

Small accident protection... that's what comprehensive insurance is for.

Widow tint a must, I have a quote of $300 for my new prado 35% tint for the front windows and 20% tint for the rest

I have experienced the above years ago and much more wiser. Use the extra money on accessories for your vehicle.

Dealers add that rubbish to the sale after the deal is done so they can make high margins on vulnerable customers. Don't buy it!

Prado paint is just fine. You won't find any posts here of it falling off (well, unless you scrape it on something) Even so, a good detail every few years will bring it up like new and won't cost anything like that.

Get the tint cheaper yourself if you want it.

Save the money to buy some real extras for your new car.

Re: protection options for new prado

Congrats on your purchase. We had the X pack protection on my wife's Yaris YRX the fabric and interior protection was great but the paint protection was IMHO a Whole load of crap and there are better paint protections packages at different Toyota dealerships. The x pack can't use any water took 2 hours to do a waterless wash on a Yaris, they said it would prevent stains from sticking not true. When we bought our Prado from a different toyota dealership they said that the Xpack is a dated product and they used a newer 1 you can use with water which is handy when your truck has mud all over it.
I personally wouldn't put any paint or fabric protection on a 4wd get a set of canvas seat covers and a set of sandgrabber floormats and the paint protection you are still going to get the old bush pin-striping when you go off road or even a shopping trolly indent around town.
Just my view on it all others may have different views. Plus It doesn't really add anything to the resale figure as the warranty is only valid for one owner.
And the money you save can go towards some aftermarket goodies

Re: protection options for new prado

When I got my new GXL a few months ago, after signing the contract with the sales guy, an attractive young lady came over and tried to push all the "extras".
I politely said no I just want the standard car, no dealer extras, but the sales spiel is so well rehearsed, I can see how many would get sucked in during the excitement of the moment.

Paint protection - overpriced and of doubtful value. Scotchgard - if you really need it buy a can and do it yourself.
Tinting - all the windows except the windscreen and front side windows are already tinted ( well dark enough for me anyway ).
I gave their tow hitch and roofbars a miss and saved a fair bit by going aftermarket.
Floormats etc - much better options aftermarket.

As said save your money and get stuff the Prado really needs like decent bashplates and better shocks and springs.
            Cheers, Wayne

Re: protection options for new prado

              Hi All,
              thanks for that fantastic feedback.
I guess i new it deep down but it is great hear from others experiences.

I pick up the car some time this week.
Bullbar, shocks and snorkel will be the end goal, so I guess a trip to ARB is in order but my first priority is to get my 2 kayaks on the roof.

I'll get a price from Solace on the window tint.
As part of the deal i got a towbar, weathershields and rubber floor mats and boot liner thrown in.

Do the bonnet protectors actually do anything or are they just for show ?

Re: protection options for new prado

Just to clarify the factory extended warranty is covered by Toyota not the actual dealer. There is a different extended warranty that the dealer offers.

The factory extended warranty has to be purchased when you buy the vehicle and as far as I am aware cannot be purchased at a later time.

The dealership I dealt with tried to charge me $2200 for the same warranty and after a call to Toyota finance they changed there mind and offered the correct price so watch out what the dealer price is as they may be illegaly trying to charge you too much.

Re: protection options for new prado

The RRP seems to be $1740 but this months special is $1595.
                  6 years or 100.000kms.

My mileage isn't high so i could get 6 years out of it which is tempting and it is transferable to a new owner.

All Toyota Dealers have the Toyota Option on extended warranty which is good at ANY Toyota Dealership, not just the one you took it out at. Will also cover mechanical repairs at locations where there is no dealership available

As mine approached three years we went back to a Toyota Dealer and extended the warranty by a further three years upto 100k. I think we paid about $300 less than the price they have offered you and it's good at any Toyota Dealership. I did ring around and spoke to CMI in Adelaide and they tried to flog me there Platinum (I think) package which is there "You come to us and we slug you a shit load of your dosh". This was about the same price the dealership as offered you. Too expensive and restrictive IMO.

my extended warranty actually run for 3 yrs or 150,000 km. (longer than i thought)
                      It cost $1450 +gst

i have just finished waxing the car.
It's feels a lot bigger when you're waxing it
The rails do make waxing the roof a bit easier.
I'm fitting my rhino racks now and then i guess i need to start to look into the bullbar. I do wish ARB had a lighter option.
                      And seat covers

Re: protection options for new prado

Yes, just got a quote today from an Adelaide dealer for $1500 for factory extended warranty for a total warranty of 6 years or 150000kms.
I will be looking at doing 30000kms a year so 150000kms will be covered in 5 years. $1500 for an extra 2 years I think is reasonable seeing the car costs $57000.

Should be looking at delivery on the 30th Sept....

Re: protection options for new prado

When I ordered my TD4, I was given the option of the 'Protection Pack' $1495.00 (from memory). It included front tint, paint/upholstry/dash protection as well as Electronic Rust Protection. Rubber tyres, not sure how that one works, but as it is a Novated Lease, I thought why not.... As for warranty, my dealer told me if I take it to them for servicing and repairs, they'd cover the 6 year extra warranty. Now I know what you guys are going to say, so let me cut in before you do, I do not pay for servicing, the company does, the extra they charge is not my issue. I plan on buying the car at the end of the lease, so I want as much for as little as I can....

As for paint protection that came with the car, its painful as you have to be careful what you wash it with, nothing with wax is allowed, the manufacturers of the product offer their own car shampoo, but normal stuff is supposed to be as good.... Does anyone else have the ProTech Protection Technologies paint protection?

screw them on the the extra warranty, i paid no where near that price.
every thing the ming mole is trying to sell you is crap!!!!!!!!!!!! (i'm a spraypainter specialising in this kind a thing)
bonnet protectors are awesome, get one.

see my build up (lippas d4d) i'll find the link, eventually!

tonnes of helpful new car info in that, and all materials at full retail would come in under $500, last the lifetime of vehicle, and is 1000% better for it!.
as said window tint way over priced.
small repair technology................. blatant rip off. i do this work for dealers, and can't for the life of me understand why people sign up for it. you would need to have 6 or 7 claims in the first year to make it worthwhile. not to mention they are screwing us on price for performing the work, which unfortunately for the consumer, reflects in the quality of the job.

                            enjoy the new car.
