2001 VX - Diff Noise

hi, new to prado point, so forgive me if i have misplaced this thread.

i am currently looking at buying a secong hand prado (private sale) and i have my eye on a 2001 VX. i have had an inspection on the vehicle and the only major problem recored is; "differential - some period whine audible, considered servicable at present however may require some future attention"

the vehicle has done approx 140k and is in otherwise good nic. any advice/thoughts would be appreciated.

Personally, I would move onto another vehicle..

I agree with Matt, Unless it's VERY cheap I'd move along as well.

Private sale = no warranty = you buy and pay for the problems

There are heaps of Prado's on the second hand market, it's won't be hard to find an immaculate one with no baggage. Wouldn't you rather spend your money on mods and accessories rather than repairs. :?:

thanks guys, they will let it go for 21k. it's in excellent condition otherwise, which makes me think perhaps it's worth the couple of grand i'll spend on doing the diff...

thoughts?

Hi, Unless that's a turbo diesel i wouldnt touch it for that price if your going to be spending more. If its a diesel probably not a bad price

it's a petrol 6 cyl...would probably come out at about 23k(ish) with cost of vehicle plus diff repairs in 50,000kms or so. forgive my ignorance, i'm very new to 4wd's. what should i be looking at for around that price?

Hi, To me its seems a fair bit to pay for a petrol one. I spent a good 3 months looking for a diesel prado around the middle of the year and it seemed all the diesel 90 series i was looking at were between $20,000-30,000 with around the high 100,000k's. I wasnt fussy about distance so i looked australia wide and the amout of times i found smick, low k, petrol ones for around the mid teens i nearly considered getting one. Best off to just enter your search in carsales.com.au and checking out what others are going for and then make your decision. Good luck mate.

21k ? Keep looking !!! I payed 19k 4 years ago with 90k on the clock , ok it was a 99 Snowy not a thing wrong with it interior exterior and mechanicaly perfect . When I went to insure it the market value was 34k :lol: :lol: . I was looking for quite a while and could not find anything in just average condition with high k's for under 25k . If your patient a bargain will pop up just waiting for you .

after all that seems the diff is ok...checked and re-checked and all passed. i decided to buy it after much negotiations. Very very clean truck, i'm very happy with it. Thanks for all your advice, now i should go and change my ownership status.

thanks snagga. i'm really pleased. having a bar and radio fitted next week...grearing up for melbourne - townsville in 6 weeks.
