  • Looking to purchase a 120 turbo Diesel

Yes there are some injector issues with 07 build 120's (and maybe other build dates). Though there is no line you can draw in the sand to say 120's built within a certain time period will have trouble. Added to that is the fact that not all D4D engines seem affected. My Sept 07 build is still going flawlessly, abeit with only 20 thou on the clock. It appears the later model Prado's, 08 - 09 (others please verify) had revised injectors installed so maybe shoot for a later model 120 if possible. There is no way to know though if you will or won't get the injector issue. Keep in mind that there are many many D4D Prado's out there that do not appear to have the issue. Other than that there are a list of minor issues the 120's had but most have now been sorted as the 120 had been around a while now. I have a 6 speed manual D4D and it's quite simply the best vehicle I have owned.

The best thing you can do is grab a coffee and get reading on the 120 section of the forum. Good luck with it!

Well what can I say, I bought my D4D Manual 6 white GX in September new.
I can honestly say that I do not think I could be happier.
The fuel ecomomy is amazing (and that is even with a roof rack)roughly 1700km to the tank.
It drives like a dream, and this doesnt have ALL the luxurys.
Good luck and Happy off roading.

Re: Looking to purchase a 120 turbo Diesel

The dash issue is the only major one that I have noticed myself mate, and with a 1KZ-TE motor, I seem to go through an aircon pulley bearing every 20-30,000k's..
Other than that, the prado's are a very reliable vehicle.

On older ones, I have known issues with radiator mount cracks etc when the alloy bullbar was fitted, and I would check any cars that have fitted snorkels; make sure they have actually sealed up the little 'air-holes' in the bottom of the air box!!!

For me, the decision was basically between D4 or 1KZ. I wanted all of the benefits of the 'new' D4, but did not want to lose on the reliability of a diesel. I have seen problems with the D4 in both prados and hiluxs, and these were attributed to both contaminated diesel and faulty fuel components.
My friends with this engine have all had to invest dollars and effort to upgrade the fuel filtration system to prevent problems, but this does not meen it suceeded.

With over 40,000k's in the first year of owning our 04 GXL and some of these in the remotest parts of Australia, reliability was the ultimate factor for me. Basic scenario; I have a diesel, I want to be able pull up at any fuel stop if needed, fill up, and keep driving. I don't want the bother of keeping fuel reciepts or wondering if the car will handle the 400+ K's to the next stop when Murphy strikes for some reason....

Plus, with some research and Joey's example of what can be achieved, it appears that the power and economy can be improved without much detriment to the reliability!!
Just make sure you check the standard items when purchasing any vehicle, and I am sure you will be onto a winner!!

Just my 2 cents..... I was sceptical at first when we bought ours, but now I am a true believer!!!
