I agree as I'm not a fan of the look of the 150. That being said I wasn't keen on the look of the 120, well not until you put a good bar on the front. The 150 with a bar looks better than without so their is potneital BUT if I had to change over my vehicle I would consider a 2nd hand 105 TD or an 2nd had 200 TD over a 150. For me it's simply about space and the 150 hasn't got any.

        Re: Prado 120 V Prado 150

I too will be looking at a 150 when my lease is up. My work pay a car allowance so this is the only reason i can afford a new car.
Having a 150 in the family (Nifty07) we have had time to overcome the ugly duck style but as other have, ARB bar, springs (Bilstein - Kings) and other bits, custom storeage system to replace the rear seats (what an effort) the look is growing on us. We removed the dumb rear tyre cover to fit BFG's and looks more like the 120 from a distance.
Offroad the 150 is just as good as the 120, bearing in mind we are comparing my VX with the 150 GXL. Creature comforts in the 150 are improved (as with most upgrades), but i still don't like the dash. Traction control in the 150 is the same as the 120VX.
Anyone concerned about the fuel capacity it is only 30 litres, and how many times did you run your 120 down to the last 20 litres out of having no fuel station. If this is still a worry you could buy a 150 litre replacement tank from brown davis or the like and have 240 litres.
Overall if the 150 has the same resale as the 120 (i made $5k profit from my last one, ie sold for more than the lease payout figure), the change won't be too hard to live with.

        Time will tell.

        Rusty.

Sorry to bring up an old thread, but this is a decision I am currently racking my brain over. Been reading through the forum a bit and this thread got me part of the way there, but I still haven't come to a decision. I used to own a GU6 Patrol, but it has gone to car heaven. So, after that experience (great off road, not as good on the highway), I want a D4D Prado.

I was initially leaning towards the 150 series, but my mate thinks the 120 series is the go (he currently has a 150 VX, used to have a 120 GXL - both petrol though). His theory is the electrical simplicity and weight savings of the 120 makes it superior (not to mention the extra 30L). I was leaning towards the 150 for the lay flat 3rd row, rear camera, generally lower KM, lower age, but mainly the greater availability (of the D4D at least).

I think I'm only going to use 5 seats anyway (though it is always nice to have the option of carrying more mates) and will probably install (or buy with) a cargo barrier and rear drawers if it doesn't have a 3rd row. So, that isn't a deciding factor too much if it is a 5 or 7 seater. Looks wise, I'm relatively indifferent between the two (I used to own a Patrol, I guess looks aren't too important to me in a 4wd). I would prefer leather and an upspec model, but it isn't a must have.

Any ideas on what else I should consider? I've spent a lot of time looking around for vehicles in my price range (sub 55k - the less I spend, the more I get to spend on accessories), and it just seems there are a lot more 150s than 120s in the D4Ds. Though the 120s are generally better kitted out.

Mods planned (dunno if they matter):
          2-3" lift
          32-33" tyres
          3" exhaust
          chip
          bullbar and winch
          rocksliders and bash plate
          towbar
plus other interior and battery mods

Looking forward to getting around the forum a bit more...

The 120 over the 150 is a no brainer IMO. should spark some lively debate though, lets here from a few who have made the change.

            Cheers Andrew
Now AJ that is not quite right- It does have less space in the back but that is because it has more legroom (storage space on and in front of the back seats) It is lower by 25mm in the roofline but 25mm higher off the ground and at 188cm, I still have plenty of room. it is only wider by a deeper dish wheel (5mm each) and heavier because it has traction control, stability control, more airbags than I can count and more sound deadening than in any other vehicle I have been in. Now I must admit the GXL does have back seats that are fully integrated, climate control, roof bars going the wrong way, soft side-steps and a few other items that did not interest me. Now the DX with the savings spent on some upgrades/additions is a ripper vehicle and well worth considering except if GVM and touring range are your biggest priorities. As for styling, I am not a fan of the boxy rear guard or the high tail lights but I rather that than a vehicle with plastic tacked all over the lower half.

Hi. I just purchased a 2007 Prado GXL. Has 230000 Kms. Needed front shocks replaced, tappet cover gasket and transfer case seals. The dealer did all the work and supplied the parts. Engine had a rattle and was diagnosed with 1 faulty injector. Dealer agreed to fix the injector problems at their expense. Seems all 4 injectors need replacing . No doubt he will hate the car by the time they finish.
Don't think they made a profit on this one.

                  looking for upgrading

I have a 2004 Grande (5sp auto v6) with 80k on the ODO. I keep thinking of upgrading to either latest Kakadu or perhaps that last of 2009 120 series. To be honest, there is absolutely nothing wrong with my current Grande, and it still purrs along highways, and even off-raod there is no creaking or squeaking.

I guess I am just getting bored after owing this car for more than 9 years. also it does not have bluetooth or ipod connection so I have to burn by music on CD before every trip.

So, do you guys think there is really any point in upgrading - or will I just end up wasting money on upgrading ? (and no, I am not loaded with cash and will need to take finance for new car - the current car is paid off).

and if i do upgrade is 150 a better go or the 2009 120 ?

Only you can decide that. I suggest taking both for a drive along a preset route, then drive you existing Prado. See which you like best.

Sounds to me like you're "up grading", if you can call it that, for the sake of it and as you say, because you are bored. Financially you will be well behind. So you have to ask what the motivation is and what else you could do with the reddies?

If electronic gadgets are your thing, install the relevant units and be happy you have a comfortable, reliable vehicle that does what you want and get with enjoying it.

                          Dixitr,
I decided to give up the factory satnav for the reasons you've outline and got a later Toyota stereo that has bluetooth, MP3, USB, AUX in, reversing camera screen and 6CD stacker. I'm very happy with the rest of the Grande.

You can try a new stereo, some new mags and a professional car detail. That will freshen it up and fix the music issues. If really bored with the current vehicle unless you need all the space in the back or all of your current touring range, get a 150. At 8,000 km a year you should keep the current vehicle until it is tired or you are ready to do regular towing.

Where did you get this from and what was the cost.? This sounds like a good solution as after market ssatnav upgrades seem to sound very fiddley with software on sdcards and all sorts of complicated sounding stuff.

To be honest, I have absolutely no complaints with the car so a freshening up may be the way to go.

They pop up on ebay from time to time. Avoid the ones from wreckers as you'd never know what sort of impact the stereo might have sustained.
