  • First time buying a Prado! Need your help!

Hi, finally found a page is that is all about Prados.

    This is awesome

I’m looking into trading in the family wagon for a 08-11 GXL Prado.
Most of them have 150k to 250k on the clock.
    It’s the 4cyl 3.0L Turbo Diesel Automatic.
    Are these Ks to much?
What should I look out for?
How long has it got left with these Ks?
This will be my first 4wd and pretty excited but I definitely need to do some research, so everyone throw your 2 cents in.

It’s going to be used as the school drop off, towing camper trailer frequently 1500kg, long trips, beach, Bush and light off-roading (small rocks) I hope.

    thank you.

P.S I also need to know how you tell the difference between the 90s 120s and 150s series, how do you tell it’s that series .
you can tell I’m new to this.

Hey mate, i see this is an older post but figured i'd post some input in case someone else comes looking.
In the 08-11 range, I would stick to one 09-11 as this would be classed as a 150 series (more on this later).
100-150k is considered still a very new engine for a diesel, this is probably a good starting point in terms of km. however up to 250km would be fine and would be cheaper. Most importantly, look for good service history (every 10k km).
These engines will easily run up past 500k km with proper maintenance.
As for the difference series, I think it's best you stick to the 150 series, 2009-present. They run a newer generation of the D4D diesel engine which has better reliability and fuel economy than the engine in the 120 series. Best to look at the model codes GDJ150 or KDJ150.

    Good luck!

      Hi
New question but same topic. I am new to 4wding and am looking at buying a 2nd hand Prado for general use around town plus camping and some offroading, with capacity to take on more adventurous trips as I learn more. Looking at possibly teaming it up with a Tracks Weekend Mate camper trailer, also 2nd hand. So, I am looking at used Prados — lots to choose from.
Looking to spend around $25K to– $33K for the car with the lowest mileage I can get.
I know that there was a major upgrade to the Prado in 2009. Should I only look at 2010+ models?
Also I've read that the automatic is fine for off road use except possibly for engine braking. Can you just change into manual mode for that?
      Thanks

Look out for the inner guard cracks. This group of cars do not like corrugations
          Stephen Bloomer
I did have - 2010 GXL D4D Auto, ARB bullbar, rails, sliders, winch, 40mm lift, Brown Davis bash plates and long range tank
