  • Is the new flip tailgate popular?

I've heard that the new flip tailgate is proving more popular than Toyota expected and they're selling like hotcakes. The three reasons given were that it looks better, better visibility (without the spare type blocking the back window) and easy access through the flippy glass bit.

I'm not sold on the better looks, the better access through the glass flippy bit is debatable when you still have to swing open the main door. Cant argue with better visibility through the rear window but has that been much of an issue?

I would have thought the glass flippy bit would have been useful only if the bottom half flipped down like the Landcruiser but the biggest whammy would be the loss of the long range tank, 87 liters is not small but it's not 150L.

Agree, NOT a buyer of flip tailgate looking here either. Prado has to be "TOUGH".

I'm about to order a new Prado and having a hard time convincing others to go with the traditional tailgate option. Others being my wife who will be the main driver, and also my brother who has no interest other than being the one selling it to me. He's the general sales manager for two Toyota dealerships and has told me that they (and Toyota) seriously underestimated how popular the flippy tailgate would be. His point of view, my wife's and a mates is that the convenience of the flippy glass bit which will get used every day far outweighs the 1% of the time that we may do a Simpson crossing and need 150L of fuel. I agree that we'll never want to be carrying 150kg of fuel unless needed so probably only put 70-80L in at a time anyway. My wife likes the look of it too.

I'm still not sold on the looks but dont want a divorce either
Has anyone bought a flippy tailgate that has an opinion either way?
Also seems the spare wheel under provides less ground clearance than the long range fuel tank.

as most of us lift our Prado 40+mm taller, i would think the use of the rear window would soon become a problem, as lifting this extra distance and possibility of stuff bashing on your rear door.

plus the window is what 400mm wide, not big enough for the shopping, unless your like me and too toight to pay for bags and would load everything individually.

personally it was the fuel storage that one me over, i will be doing a long range tank and hold 230l for my bigger trips. BUT i do think it looks better
