  • Buying a Prado for my mother - would love some advice - she lives in the bush

    Hello all,

I've heard this is the place to come for all things Prado. I hope you don't mind my first post being a request for some advice.

I need to buy a Prado for my mother. We have always had 70 series landcruisers, but my father is getting a bit old and she is having to tend to lots of things on the farm by herself. My brother recently bought a Prado, she drove it and said she really liked it. So I've come here to see what you guys think about which one to buy.

Her needs would be: moderate 4wd capability, supreme reliability, some comfort (but coming from a 70 she won't be too fussed), some decent water fording capability, not fussed on electronic gadgets as there's no reception except I know she would like a reverse camera (could be aftermarket if needed), decent fuel capacity, definitely diesel.

The farm is an hour from the closest shop, 30 mins being dirt with the road sometimes washed away and rutted, and sometimes substantial creek crossings when the creeks are up. I don't really mind how much it costs, but I know she doesn't like the idea of new cars due to the massive hit in value once you drive away. Probably around 50k or so? Can be more or less. I think the main thing for her would be reliability. So basically a comfortable easier to drive 70 series sort of thing. I'm guessing she would appreciate an auto for a change too unless they're renowned for issues.

Thanks in advance to anyone wishing to chime in, I'd really appreciate it.

    Kind Regards

    Rob

2.8 L GXL auto. about 2 -3 years old. Add extended breathers to diffs, gearbox and transfer case . Add a snorkel. The only issue with these is the DPF and Toyota is gearing up with a major software update which allegedly makes a big difference. Should be plenty around $50k. ... and off course All Terrain tyres.

Thanks 404, are the electronics fairly reliable these days? The mods you mentioned I would do for sure. Is the 2.8 and drivetrain reliable? Any mods necessary to drive train other than suspension necessary to cop a bi-weekly punishment?

As reliable as anything gets and better than most.

If she likes it simple and has no need for the rear seats ( wagon area 6 and 7!seats) then I suggest that a GX model (2014 onwards) would be more than adequate. A GX still comes with a rear view camera but gets simple to use manual air cond rather than the fancy climate control air and feature black mirrors and door handles rather than painted models.. Has the same running gear as the higher speck models. The GX has (in my view) a better folding rear seat providing a continuos flat floor. As mentioned above the current since mid 2015 have the 2.8 lt engine , prior to that they had a 3.0 lt motor.
New 2015 150s GX 5 seater with floor mats, towbar and a big wish list
Previously a 2004 120s 1KZ GX silver manual with stuff
before that a 1996 RV6 90S with lots of gear

Agree, the GX sounds like a better choice for her requirements. Should be able to get a new one close to her budget.

Yep. Mine is a GX but you have to watch that you don't get an ex mine vehicle that has been thrashed to within an inch of its life. New around $56-57 k on road. with tow bar and reverse sensors added.
