  • Buy now or wait for 2020?

So, have decided on a new GXL, have the funds ready to go but was hesitant to buy before seeing what the 2020 brings. Anyone else in this situation?

I'm doubtful we would see a new power plant, but something like Apple Carplay and a new entertainment system would probably make me hold onto my cash for a few months longer.

Has anyone heard anything from dealers on the 2020 model? I think historically, the next years model details are release Oct/Nov?

Maybe the DPF will be right by then?

Buy now, when was the last time Toyota released anything ground breaking? If you have the money and you want it then go for it now mate.

Good point Hostile. Not holding my breath. Will be a little disappointed if I buy now and the 2020 does have some incremental improvements though.

You know you the best mate, if you will be disappointed if you buy now then maybe wait. Not too long of a wait anyway. I got my 2018 Prado in March 2018 only to have a matter of months later they started to release them with the DPF button. I was disappointed, until I found out it did nothing. Hahaha. I don't think the 2020 will be release without a DPF and that seems to be the biggest problem at the moment. All the best with the decision making mate.

I have read they might be introducing AdBlue soon which they have on their overseas models, which some things I read suggest may reduce the DPF issue? Not a mechanic myself so don’t know how.. but might be worth thinking about?

DPF is dealing with soot, AdBlue is reducing Nox, so they are different emission reduction layers....which will 100% bring more complexity to the system and will cause more trouble than a single DPF.

Sorry, I wasn't saying you were wrong. I am not a mechanic either. my point is, diesel was good when it was a simple engine, nowadays regulations make diesel nowhere to go.

Maybe wait for the class action lawsuit to run it's course. Toyota Australia may need to offer something as compensation or perhaps longer warranty for the DPFs for their vehicles. If you can wait, I suggest you do. Depending on the outcomes of this lawsuit, it could affect resale values of Prado, Hilux, Fortuner and Hiace which all use this same motor.

Or if you can stretch your budget, depending on your requirements, perhaps a new 200 Series GX or GXL may be the go. Whilst they have DPFs, there are no DPF related issues with the 200 Series. The 200 Series does not have Apple Carplay, but this is an easy fix by way of replacing the radio with an aftermarket Android unit.

Sound advice however I respectfully disagree to a point. First of all if Toyota loses the class action every Toyota vehicle with a DPF will have an extended warranty if anything goes wrong with the DPF. Second of all, cars, all cars, should be purchased to be enjoyed. Not to see who has the lowest KMs and most highly polished vehicle years after purchase. There are down sides to all cars. Buy a Ferrari and pay $10,000 for a service, buy a Prado and you may or may not have a DPF issue, buy a Hyundai Getz and drive it for two years and get back what you paid for it.
Figure out your budget, figure out what you want to do with the vehicle, then get what's appropriate for you and your family and enjoy it the way YOU should. No matter what you buy it will either stay in perfect condition hidden in your garage with low km's or it will get damaged by someone opening their door on it at a Westfields car park. Up to you what you buy and how you use it. Hope that helps.

No disrespect to anyone, I'm just a realist.

If you always wait to make sure you get the latest then you will be waiting forever, unless there is something specifically you need or want I think go with what suits you best now and enjoy it.
