  • Pretty sure I've been sold a lemon

I'd like to preface this by saying, firstly hello! This forum is a gold mine and I love the attitude of everyone on here. Secondly, I know the following is entirely my fault.

So I bought my Prado the other week, 120 GXL 2004 TD. Want it to do the Big Lap round Oz, it's done 260kkms. It's got all the bells and whistles and it looks great, drives nice, but I'm a responsible buyer and I try to do things right, so I make sure to book in an inspection. Problem is the buyer is leaving the country in two days, as they're an old Swiss couple who've finished their fun, and I can't make it over the following day, so the inspection and purchase need to happen on the same day realistically.

The inspection happens and I speak to the mechanic - all good he says. There's a few bits and pieces that need fixing but nothing expensive, nothing major. We have a long chat about some of these things, and I tell him - look I'm not a mechanic so I can't do these myself, and he tells me in a few short sentences the bits that need doing and what a shop would need to do them. Sounds fine. I do a bit of work on my motorbike so I'm not completely clueless, and this guy seems confident, he has great google reviews. Is this good value etc? He reckons I can negotiate a fair price, which is essentially the top redbook value plus some money for all the accessories.

I make the purchase, happy days. That night I get the full report and I glance over it, looks ok. The immediate repairs section is what he told me I think, no problem. Then I google what I need to do
    • Control Arm Bushings - cracked, need replacing.
    • Front lower shock rubber bushes (distorted) - Replace bushes
    • Auto transmission - rear main seal (leaking) Replace seal
    • Turbo oil feed pipe (leaking around gasket) Replace gasket

and after plenty of frantic hours:

The first one knocks me for 6. Looks like either 6-8 hours labour and a minimum $250 in parts, or nearly a grand in parts and labour to replace the entire control arms.

The second, shock rubber bushes...potentially not too bad, but the juries out.

Auto transmission - rear main seal. This one sounds like either a massive job or a tiny one, and I can't figure out which?

Turbo oil feed pipe - I haven't even managed to figure this one out yet

I send this to a shop who gives me a rough guess at $3-4k for parts and labour. Another tells me it will take them a few days to put together an estimate 'due to the extent of the work that is required'. So I feel slightly sick, and I'm panicking a bit. I know this is my fault, and if I'd googled these things beforehand I would have at least knocked the price off the car. However, I do feel pretty aggrieved by the fact that I paid for a mechanics opinion, and I don't think it was accurate.

Moral of the story here is google the stuff that comes up in your inspection before you purchase.

    Any advice?

    Minklet,

You can get DIY control arm bushes you can install yourself, front lower shock bushes are a few bucks- easy DIY. Turbo oil gasket $15.

The rear main seal is only a few bucks but yes you have to take off the transmission. Its not hard but it takes a few hours.

Dont stress. Youll have plenty of preventative maintenance to do before a big lap, this is just a part of it. Chip away and do it yourself, get fixed price quotes to do the rear main.
    Cheers

Thanks mate, I have a tendency to think the worst.

Problem is I have no proper tools, or anywhere to work on the vehicle. I have high lift jack and some socket sets but that's about it right now - my car space doesn't have a whole lot of room but I suppose I could always drive it somewhere else. For my motorbike I use Rising Sun Workshop which lets you rent garage space with all tools, is there any kind of facility like that in Sydney for cars? I'm about to buy the service manual.

From what I've read it's pretty tough to install the bushes yourself right? You need to heat it up with a blow torch and a press, or various other dodgy looking methods

Thinking there's very little chance of me being able to sort the bushings out myself. I'm wondering if I could get some control arms from a wreckers, these looks in ok condition...but it's hard to really tell, i've asked for more photos

Otherwise maybe getting the original bushings from amayama for $200+ and sucking up the labour charge for the replacement, which I'm seeing is probably at least 6 hours.

        I'm guessing these are terrible

Can I suggest looking at removing the control arms yourself and take them to a shop that has a press to remove and install the bushes. This would save labour costs. I got a quote a couple of years back to replace lower controll arm bushes and was quoted $600 parts and labour.

Yeah that's a good idea. I've got a high lift jack, I guess I need to get hold of some jack stands!

Found some good step by step instructions for the transmission seal, pretty hopeful for that one. Need to order the service manual

Price up complete control arm replacements inc Bushes. Pedders etc do them. Around $250 each last time I checked.

Yeah I spoke to Pedders and they quoted me $260 each. And then $350+ to fit them and then the wheel alignment of $120. So this 'small job' is a minimum of a $1k really, that's the cheapest I've found anywhere. I really can't understand what the inspection mechanic was thinking, and he won't return my calls.

Is a wreckers out of the question? Or just not worth the risk that the ball joint and the bushings will fail soon anyway

Inspection mechanic pointed out these items.
He's not to know if you have access to cheap parts or free labour from clever mates.
Auto trany rear seal has me guessing. Are you sure it was trany and not transfer case?

Yeah I get that it's still my fault for not getting a quote on the repairs before purchasing, but I did say to him I couldn't do this work myself and I'd have to take it to a shop and he still said it's a small job.

But even if I could do this myself I'd be looking at $500 + wheel alignment just for the control arms/bushings. If you're buying an inspection off a mechanic you find on the internet, it stands to reason you are neither a mechanic or have mechanic mates who will do cheap work for you

Yeah pretty sure he means transfer case based on the photos and videos I've found elsewhere.

There is also old oil (not currently leaking) from the rear main engine seal that he didn't mention but was in the report that I got the next day. Hopefully that turns out to be ok.

I know I should have sat on it for a week and got quotes, but I trusted this guy from what he was telling me on the phone - I'm not a mechanic, that's the whole point of the inspection. We talked for ages and his point of view was that it was all fine, even to the point that they weren't big enough jobs to knock much money off the price (damage to the door being the only real issue on the car). I told him how much I was offering and he agreed - in the end I paid $16k for it on the basis of it being worth $12k, with a full years rego and the full range of accessories.

I'm not suggesting I have any legal recourse here, I definitely don't. But I still feel like I've been taken for a ride.

Correct me if I'm wrong (and I really hope I'm not) but a car needs a roadworthy to renew rego in nsw right? Cos the rego was renewed just before I bought it.

I'm at work now and I don't think I was actually given the pink slip.

Edit: Ok so I just read that a roadworthy is a blue slip, not the pink slip. So I don't have one of those. Why the #### is this so complicated?

Wile I understand your frustration about the potential costs, IMO the issues are relatively minor, especially for a 16 year old car.
Regards the lower shock bushes if your doing a lap of Aust I would suggest you fit new shocks and possibly new springs before the start. The turbo oil feed gasket leak really is a minor item, fiddly yes, messy yes but still minor. The control arm bushes are a bit more of a job but again not a major and for a lap of this big country of ours not a deal breaker in my mind.

As to the Auto trans - rear main leaking that is a bit confusing but might still be minor.

In essence I don't think you have bought a lemon, you have a 16 year old Prado with a couple of minor items to correct.

Might be time to buy some gear and DIY.
Lower control arm bushes are not easy but once the arm is out, you can take it to a shop and have them fit new bushes, I would only ever fit Toyota bushes, but that's your choice.
Once the arms are out, your strut is dead simple to remove and fit new lower bushes. If the old shocks are suspect, this is the time to replace them, new shocks come with nice new lower bushes.
A 15 year old 4X will have lots of these items that might be worn out.
There's also the rear end with heaps of bushes as well.
I wouldn't contemplate any sort of off-road trip unless I'd been over/under the whole car.
