  • SWB Prado SX KDJ155R - How Much Is it Worth

I am looking at buying a 2009 Prado SX (completely stock) with 68,000km in really good condition with full service history.

Let me know how much you think it is worth or how much you have paid for your shorties. Cheers

$30k ? use the carsales 'value my car' tool to give you an idea of a value.
I looked on car sales , there are three SX for sale, with higher km's, but in the 30oddk range.

Check redbook.com.au or glasses guide, also lookup what people are asking on carsales.com.au

I would happily pay $30k. They however want $34k which I think is abit steep since it is a 2009. I think Covid has raised prices past the point of not return.

I guess it depends on how long you plan on keeping it, and what else you may purchase if not the SWB. I have a 2013 SX, that I have had for a couple of years, and there is nothing else on the market that matches it, for what I want in this sort of car.
You will pay a premium, as they don't make them any more, and it does have low km, which should mean you'll have it a long time.

          good luck with your decision.

            Hello Simong,

            Thanks for your reply.

My other option would be a fortuner, however I do love the uniquness of the SWB. When you say nothing else matches it, do you also mean the uniqeness? Thanks.

            Thanks again

              hi Hainsy, when I say nothing else matches it, I mean ;
              * for the size, it has the same engine, brakes and tyres as the five door, so it is more economical and powerful (as it weighs less) and is shorter
              * being a short wheel base, it is great for four wheel driving, great ramp over etc angles (but less space for stuff if that is an issue), but as it is a two door, you wouldn't be buying it if you have a family of four
              * fuel tank is 87 litres, most short wheel bases have 60 litre, so better range (and it's diesel, so great torque)
              * tows really well, my boat / trailer is only around 1300kg, but it tows really well and doesn't seem to use any / much more fuel than normal driving
              * it's a Toyota, I am biased, I like and trust Toyota's, they are reliable and country towns all seem to have Toyota dealers or people experienced with Toyotas
              * it doesn't have a DPF, some of the new Prado's (the five doors) seem to have issues with the DPF, not having one, is a good thing (except for environmental considerations, but if that was a real issue, we would be riding pushbikes and not driving diesel four wheel drives)
              * it is great driving at 110km on the highway, and then you can take it off road or on the beach, drop into low range, and it performs really well (don't forget to drop the tyre pressure)
              * I live in Brisbane, so appreciate a car that is not so large (like a five door Prado or a 200 series), it is the same size as a 'normal' mid/small sized family car, so it is easy to drive around town and park, etc

I think that is about it. For a short (not long) two door diesel four wheel drive that has pretty good off road credentials, decent range and towing ability, the only other option would be a Jeep Wrangler (or maybe a two door Mitsubishi Pajero, but they might be a bit older than the Prado now), and the older diesel two door Wranglers (from the reviews) aren't so good on the highway, but great off road.

In life, all things are a compromise, for me the SWB Prado is a great compromise. I am not sure what I will buy when this one needs to be replaced.

                Hey Simong,

Thanks againg for the insight, you are a legend.

Yer ive owned three short wheel base Land Rover Defender 90's over the years (weird obsession as I am tall and it is uncomfortable as) and still own one with my dad so I understand the slight annoyances of short wheel bases.

I might go ahead with a sx or zr just need to find the right one at the right price. Thanks again for your help.

I have driven the 90 Defender, and really really really want one, I keep looking on car sales, but the price (and potential issues with reliability) put me off.

Buying any car is a lot of money, and we don't want to make a mistake, I have been (and am) very happy with my SX, so would recommend one, especially with such low kms.

What model/year is your current Defender 90 ? there are a few on car sales, the my14 and my15 models, for mid $50k so a lot of money, but they aren't making any more of them ..

Hopefully, you'll get the right SWB
Hainsy . When I got my ZR, there's not much bargaining you can do with the dealers as there's not much out there. I reckoned, I sent emails to pretty much all the dealers in Sydney and none of them had stock. I was picky about the color as well as I didn't want black, lesson learnt from previous cars . I think I got the last of the SWB, got mine back Mar 13. Since I got it, I can count the number of SWB seen on the road one hand. Well, may be more than 5, def less two hands for sure.
It is very capable one - I was in the vic high country last year and did the billy goat bluff track in the wet weather. From youtube videos and tv shows that I saw, it looks hard, but it did it in a breeze - and I thought is that all .
