A p.s. on 18" tyres. The tyre shop who fitted AT tyres on my 18" wheels yesterday said that 265/60/18 is becoming quite a common size. So availability away from metro areas should not be a major problem, and as that trend continues, the price gap with 265/65/17 should narrow over time. I guess that's some consolation for the current extra cost.

I did the rounds of the tyre shops a couple of days ago, pricing the various options for alternative AT tyres for my 18" Kakadu wheels. (I waited until I had the vehicle to be sure that I had 18" rather than 19"). I discovered that the price of a 265/60/18 is not far off $100 more than 265/65/17. So a set of five is maybe $450 more expensive. Over the long haul and multiple replacements, a replacement set of 17" rims might be economical and mean that replacement tyres could be more easily sourced in remote areas.
I mention this because at one shop I remarked about the VX / Kakadu change to 19", and the reply was, "Gee, that's going to be expensive!". I didn't think to get a price, but I suspect that for those stuck with 19" wheels, a set of 17" rims is going to be a real money saver. I also suspect that there's going to be a very limited selection in 265/55/19, assuming that's the size. I just did a quick search and only found one option, a Pirelli, which didn't look to be AT. What were Toyota thinking?

Toyota NZ says: "GX and VX Limited models are currently unavailable. New models estimated to arrive late 2022. Please contact your local Toyota Store for more information." Wow!

I picked my Kakadu up today and asked the dealer about the new spec. He said that it starts in July, but when I pushed on precisely when, like did they suddenly start building them last Thu (1 July), he confessed he didn't know. I doubt that any dealer does.

So I was just looking at the toyota website, I clicked on the prado sub menu and it appears a new motion prado has been added, the 19 inch rims look like the same offered as those overseas, I couldnt tell of a grille change though.

I can't really understand the change made by Toyota, we aren't purchasing a Prado for it to stay on sealed roads but I guess they still have the GX and GXL models with the 17 inch wheels.
It just would have been nice to have the larger wheels as an option instead of standard. I can't find all terrain tyres anywhere in that size either.
I have purchased some cheap 17 inch GXL wheels to put on the vehicle when I plan to do more off-road focused travel, which is a bit of a pain but it is an inexpensive solution for me.

I've also ordered a VX Prado and I have been trying to track down this information.
The best example that is likely to come to fruition in Australia is seen on the Toyota NZ Website.

VX and Kakadu models receive unique 19 inch wheels.

So they make sure you know that you'll be paying more for the vehicle they may deliver in six month's time but don't have much idea what they'll be selling you.Originally posted by DustyDog View PostAnother dealership told me that there would be new rims for the Kakadu and some minor cosmetic changes but the full spec sheet should be released by the end of the month so we will see soon enough.
You'd think that now all available stock of the old model has been sold, they'd know what components they have ordered to be bolted into the new one.

Ok, have been doing a lot of digging around this as we ordered a new Kakadu and was told it would be more expensive. After contacting a lot of dealers who didn't know, I spoke to a couple of sales managers who had the info I was looking for, in saying that they both had different info so we can piece it together from that.
Yes, there will be blind spot monitoring added to models which don't already have it but the major addition (to all models I believe) are new Toyota connect features that will help you contact people/emergency services in case of an emergency and will also be able to locate your vehicle remotely if it is stolen. Another dealership told me that there would be new rims for the Kakadu and some minor cosmetic changes but the full spec sheet should be released by the end of the month so we will see soon enough.

Logically a 19” Prado tyre will be 265/55/19 to maintain the same overall diameter which has not changed from the 90 series.
265/70/16 then to 265/65/17 & 265/60/18

I also made an order for VX today and heard Illuminated Puddle Lamps will be added to GXL too. Would 19 inch on VX run okay on sand (like Fraser)? Does anyone know detail profile for the 19inch rim?Last edited by Peacemaker; 08-05-2021, 07:18 AM.

Just made an order on VX and it's subject to price change. Seems gx and gxl will get rcta and blind spot. Vx and Kakadu might have 19 inch wheel.
