How can one tell whether an engine is Euro emission compliant or not? Read somewhere that the cracked piston issue only affects engines that are Euro compliant whereas pre-Euro versions are ok.

As I understand it in Australia Euro 4 standards apply and the Euro 4 was "fully implemented" by July 2010. Does that mean any car from mid 2010 onwards in Euro 4 compliant? (Note that in Europe Euro 4 standards applied to cars newly registered from 1 Jan 2006).

Have a look at this link Emission Standards: Australia: On-Road Vehicles and Engines (dieselnet.com) which shows that in AU Euro 4 was mandated for light duty diesel vehicles from 05/06 and petrol 08/10.

I think you will also find if a vehicle has an OBDII connector fitted then it is Euro4 or greater.
