  • buying a 2nd hand country 06 gxl...

    Hey guys,
Well we are in the process of buying a used prado. We have come across one that a few people have warned us to be very careful of and would like some advice from ppl who actually have and use prados.

The prado is an 06 gxl TD 3.0 (1kz-te) with 150k kms,

but a lot of those have been done on longish trips around the west of qld. Its lived its life on a property and has done a fair bit of driving on dirt roads, NOT really off roads much at all. It appears to have been fairly well used (if you know what i mean, a few dints here and there, and a bit of wear to the centre console area).

What id like to know is what are the major issues that are likely to come up and would be the result of this sort of life for the car? (by major i mean costly) We are getting a full mechanical check done by a guy whos a bit of a perfectionist, which is good, but id like to have some idea about it too. The reason we are still considering it, even after all the wear and warnings, is its about the only one we can afford... Its the same sort of price an 02 with 250k kms would sell for. So its a very tempting deal. But not if its going to cost us $$$ soon. (also it needs to be no older that 06 because we are going to get it on novated lease. Otherwise we would be looking such exp cars).

I spoke to a friend of my dads, that just bought an 03. He suggested that i would need to probably replace the suspension straight up, to make sure that there is no dust in the door seals and to really check the engine for dust as these engines are prone to problems with dust getting in? Also to check the radiator, as he has just had replace his, because it had corroded because it didnt have an earth strap?

So if you guys can just talk me through what might be worth looking at, and whether (and i know it will be hard with out seeing it) whether you would consider it with the current description?

Apart from the usual things common to any secondhand car, have whoever is checking it over have a good look at the steering rack mounts and the steering rack itself. These can wear prematurely if it has seen a lot of corrugations.
If it still has the original suspension I would budget getting this changed soon.
That amount of ks shouldn't be a problem if it has been serviced properly. Does it has a full service history? If not I would be very cautious.

Is it the 1KZ or the D4D which was released at the end of 06. If it is a D4D check that the injectors have been replaced with the newer style otherwise they will give you some grief at some stage.

ah yes the steering i had forgotten that i had read and spoken to ppl that mentioned that. cheers.

Its the old oiler, not the d4d, if we were getting a little bit banged up d4d for just under 30k i dont think i would have thought twice. Thanks for the input though, i will make mention that its a 1kz-te in the OP. cheers

For the 1kzte of that age you will probably need to consider the following.

Suspension will probably be due if not overdue for replacement ( i used to go out the farm all the time and had 3 leacking shocks at 100,000) it is cheaper to get a kit and do the lot rather than just shocks $1300, to $1800 depending on system

Replace the radiator coolant as i find some mechanics take long life to the extreme.

The injectors may need looking at so you are looking at say $600 to have them done

You will probably be on your third set of tyres

Make sure the 5000 oil changes have been done as i know farmers are notorious for not servicing (for example i know i am lazy but our paddock bashing hilux has not seen new oil for 150000). If you lease the will only put the 10,000 servicies in as the 5k ones are a reccomended service only

For someone who has leased before and crunched the numbers unless you are doing it as some sort of writeoff i would not bother with a car of that vintage and kays and i am suprised the leasing company would touch it as it is a private sale. Most leasing companies are looking for k and age to be where there is either some sort of warrently left or extended warranty avaliable to try to offset some major repairs if required
Dont list all ya mods, you will only be more upset when i get further
