Hi All,
Expanding on my Intro (viewtopic.php?f=1&t=6&p=145036#p145036):
I have previous with Defenders but am new to Prados. You wouldn't believe how popular they are here, and with good reason I am sure. There are no Defenders here (I ain't seen one, anyway) and I ruled out Discos - a poky little car after a 110. The Prado has great use of space, in my book.
'Twill be only vehicle, so has to cover everything from day-to-day through long, fast highway hauls, desert work, and hopefully some long tours to Europe and North Africa - I'm not asking too much, am I?
Having been to the Car Bazaar in Jeddah, I have pretty much ruled out the diesel models (only the 5L-E or worse available) I am looking for a V6 probably from 2003-2005 vintage. Mileages (kms, actually) are typically from 100k to 250k. 250k cars look and feel overworked so I reckon 150k tops unless there is good reason.
From my notes, here's what I have seen (in no particular order and only sketchy details):
2001 156,000 km, manual, auxiliary tank, engine? ~12k USD - a bit rough but if mileage genuine, may be worth another look?
2005 110,000 km, manual, diesel, no aux, ~16.5k USD - a nice car, inside and out and underneath - but that engine just does not look up to the job in any way. Shame.
2004-2006 Various, 110,000 - 150,000 km, V6s, ~17k - 20k USD - this may be the range I have to look at, though I'm reluctant to go over 17k
There seem to be few with auxiliary tank, which I would like.
The various trim levels and engines are a bit hard to figure out, what with the sellers being a bit vague (year, mileage and price is all you get), so I would be grateful for handy tips on identification, particularly engines. With Toyota there seems to be a heck of a lot of variation from region to region, from what I see on the web.
Also, what are the main points to look for in Prados, aside from the generals which apply to more or less any off-road vehicle?
Looks like a great forum - I'm looking forward to spending time here as well as in the desert :-)
Cheers,
Mark in Yanbu
