  • Happy to help & glad it worked.

I'd like to hear from anyone who has the problem with the >>| function as I described above as it is still an issue.

My guess is that a similar problem might exist with other aftermarket head units in that the ^ (Seek+) button on the steering pad sends the same signal as the Mode button which is confusing my head unit.

This is from the Toyota Service Manual CD
    http://www.fujak.com/Temp/SteeringWheelPad.pdf - sorry I couldn't upload the PDF as there's a limit of 19.5k (!)
& shows that the steering wheel pad buttons work by differing the resistance which is all good except that the Seek+ (^) button outputs the same resistance as the Mode button (below 2.5 Ohm) & I presume that's the problem.

I'm awaiting a response from the seller of the head unit I bought but in the meantime anyone with this problem & preferably a fix? Can anyone explain how the Toyota head unit differentiates between these two button presses?

    Cheers

    Craig

    • Hi Craig,

Don't know if this helps but I went through the learning for the steering controls again and I ended up with 16 for the Mode button, 0 for >>l, 31 for l<<, 63 for VOL+, 96 for VOL -.

As I said before, I had no problems but have you tried learning the mode button and then skipping the up and down and programming the volume buttons and then saving it and coming back and trying the up and down buttons again.

I really think that it sounds like an issue with the head unit because even though the mode and up buttons output the same value it is through two separate pins in the connector (SW1 and SW2).

I think the person at Autotunez is or was on holidays. I am sure they will reply and be helpful. Let us know how you get on.

      • Thanks Paul

I bought my head unit from a different supplier but I believe it's the same as the 7" one Autotunez sells. My seller has been very helpful but no solution as yet.

I tried your suggestion, which is what my seller suggested today as well, no luck. As soon as I press the Seek+ (^) button on the steering wheel pad it resets the Mode command on the head unit. I suspect differing codes might depend on the particular head unit. FYI I get Mode 16; Seek- 41; V+ 68 & V- 97.

I think you might be on to something re the two separate pins though & had a closer look at the wiring diagram. Seems that the Mode button is on it's own essentially shorting SW2 to Ground. I noticed on the wiring loom that came with my head unit that although there are three pins, matching the three on the car side of the loom, the two signal wires join together to go into the back of the head unit:
        (see photo)
I think this is the problem & suspect:
        (1) the loom is wrong & these two wires should connect separately to the head unit so that the two similar signals can be detected separately
        (2) the head unit only has two SWC inputs being Signal & Ground which is why the two signal wires join together.
Unfortunately I didn't check the plug into the head unit to see whether there is a connection that for some reason isn't being used.

I'll persevere with my seller & advise progress but in the meantime if anyone has any other ideas please post.

        Cheers

Just a guess Craig, but if one of the two signal wires went through another resistor before they were joined it would change the reading on that signal enabling the head unit to differentiate between the signals in the one wire. I would assume the head unit doesn't care what value it gets, as long as it is different so it can learn what signal is from which button.

As I said though, it is just a guess.

          • Good point Paul

It'd be relatively simple to measure the resistance of the different function switches & insert a resister on SW2 to give a value, say, midway between Seek+ & Seek-. I'd also expect that the head unit is just recording differing values.

FWIW the seller has been good with communication & responded today "The supplier is currently looking into this issue as we have another customer facing the same issue. Rest assured we will resolve this issue amicably. In their preliminary findings, very likely they will supply us with another set of SWC wires which has 3 dedicated wires running in the head unit. We will keep you posted in a day or two."

I'll see what they come up with & keep this possible solution in mind.

            Cheers

            • Hi All

I contacted Autoproz/Ozproz their suggestions was

              1. Go to Setup - Hardware - Wheel - Learn

              2. After entering into the Steering wheel control menu,

              3. Select 'Mode [ - ]' on head unit, then push the steering wheel 'mode' button in your car, it will show a numerical value, then its done for the mode.

              4. Press 'Save and Exit'

              5. Repeat the above steps for other buttons e.g volume, next, previous. Remember to press 'Save and Exit' after every button.

Didn't work for me. I will try again with different order of buttons

              • Same process they told me Rabs - doesn't work in any button order, at least on units where the three SWC wires join into two, as the same resistance value is supplied to the head unit by Mode and Seek+ as mentioned in prior posts & the head unit can't therefore tell the difference between the buttons.

I looked at pictures of some different models on EBay & some show all three wires going into the head unit whereas the one I bought has only the two.

                Cheers

                • got another reply back tonight and should have three wires

"From our records, it seems like you are having the harness for older make of Toyota models. We will ship a SWC plug with 3 wires to you asap."

                  • OK so I emailed the seller & explained why the three-wire-into-two-wire cannot possibly work.

I've now received a new wiring harness which passes all 3 SWC wires through to the head unit - all good & working.

I didn't get a chance to try adding the resistor as suggested in an earlier post.

                    Cheers

                            • Good on ya Bigpat, hope it all goes well for you. Mine's still going strong although I still haven't hooked up the reverse camera which was a pretty big draw card in the first place since the wife drives it through the week.
I think it's a great unit as long as it keeps doing what it has been doing!

                              • I had problems with my built in bluetooth mic, not very clear for the caller on the other end. Contacted the supplier, no problems, replaced with remote mic unit. Still very happy overall.
