It says suitable for kayaks and canoes. Sounds a bit too small for the mighty Prado.

At 230 grams i doubt you could winch a pushbkie off it, thats less weight than a can of coke! Sand anchors are big and heavy for a good reason. Get a set of Maxtrax and forget the sand anchor.

          Cheers Andrew

Looks like it would double as a swag warmer too.

What's weight got to do with it?
Its simply a question of whether it will gain enough purchase to anchor the car or not.
Not a real good comparison putting $300 Maxtrax against a $20 anchor... Lots of people cannot afford Maxtrax Andrew. This may provide some people with a useful alternative.
I haven't eye-balled it but it does sound a bit small, however it doesn't add much weight to the roof rack if it has a chance of working.

Weight is an indication strength and size, it's not some space age material that has enormous strength compared to weight, it nylon. Trying to winch a vehicle that weighs more than 10,000 times as much as the anchor is so far from being realistic it's not funny. If someone can't afford Maxtrax they can't afford to waste $20 on one of these.

By all means go and buy one, but when you get stuck on the beach on an incoming tide and it doesn't work it won't seem cheap. If you only have $20 for sand recovery gear then a shovel is your best bet.

                  Cheers Andrew

This is posted simply as a potential 'heads up' to other drivers. Its up to them to eyeball it and decide for themselves...

Fair enough, I would hate for someone to read this and spend the $20 thinking it has a snowballs chance in hell of being remotely useful in recovering a 4wd, as you say though, everyone can look and decide for themselves.

                      Cheers Andrew

But if you can't afford Maxtrax, surely you can't afford the winch needed to make use of a sand anchor???

Also, the cheapest sand anchor is your spare tyre... Of course, you'll need a shovel too...

It's not even for the 4wd market, they are kayaks and used when fishing!

There is a lot of force at play, I have pulled a fully buried spare out of the sand before. Cannot see any sort of sea anchor being useful unless it is the one off the Queen Mary.

And after you do that once you will go out and buy a set of Maxtrax to make sure you never have to do it again

personally I have never buried the spare, but a number of guys in our club have done this as a training exercise, its at best a marginal recovery technique with as often as not the spare being pulled out of the ground as per mjrandoms experience.

Even winching of another vehicle with brakes on is not always enough to extract a bogged vehicle, I can recall a couple of occasions needing to hook 2 vehicles together as an anchor.

                              Cheers Andrew
