  • roof top deal

    hi all...
i have been looking around and trying to work out what brand i should go or what type of deal i can get on roof top tents or awnings..looking around and i found this set up...

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-ROOF-...e18cae8&_uhb=1

what do you all think? walk away? jump on the chance? or spend the dollars and go a well known brand and buy one at a time?

Canvas looks a little bit thin, and without being able to see it first you don't know what the matress is like. Having said that it is a very cheap package.

We have a gordi gear RTT and awning. They have been great. Excellent service from them as well, and if you buy it all at the same time they do a deal. The key thing for us was that it came with a decent matress, so we knew we wouldn't have to worry about replacing it just to be comfy. Plus as soon as you have to start changing them around if you go for a thick matress it might be comfier, but it is a lot harder to close up!

these guys sell them cheap, not sure on quality but might be better service than a random ebay person?

Having looked at the Ironman and the ARB tent I really couldn't see any difference but I do think these guys might have quality control on the tents that are made for them.
There are quite a few, but not all that come out of the same factory. They all come out blank, and then when they arrive here are distributed. ARB unpack them, whack on a logo, and then whack an extra number on the front for example.
RTT's are generally made in South Africa.

We've spent 3 straight weeks away in ours (for our honeymoon of all things!) and some mornings I woke up and forgot that I was sleeping on a piece of foam in a tent. Sure you notice how comfy it is when you get home and get to sleep in a proper bed, but as far as camping goes, it's luxury, without going up to the next step of having a trailer or van being towed along behind you.

There are a number of manufacturers making rtts these days and they can really only be seperated by the quality of the canvas and fittings. For example my first lot of red dog offroad tents were ok but now they are upgraded to ykk zippers, better mattress, thicker canvas and better straps that hold it all together. If you get the cheaper ones they will do the job however you may need to replace bits from time to time. No biggy aslong as you know what you could be up for.

                    That'd be alright in summer!

If you are after ventilation, then the best that I have seen was when we were at Ormiston Gorge last year. Couple pulled up, rolled out the double inflatable matress, found a rock and tied it to some rope. Threw the rock over the tree and hoisted up some mossie netting to cover the bed. Slept with just that whilst the dingo's wandered past all night!

I've a Feather Lite Tent which is great and never had any dramas with. Used it heaps and still looks like new. You get what you pay for.

Tip: Check the weight of the cheap once, sometime can make a huge difference.
