  • cheap hot water camping gas system

just bought one of these to throw in my camper i am building at the moment, price is great! I wanted something like this because it is self igniting unlike the coleman and cube style ones as it will be connected to the kitchen sink and shower.

Original post was of the heater with natural gas, here is the LPG one!!

this is very interesting regarding natural gas and lpg etc being used on different platforms.

Ive got a friend who is a trucky and several of his friends do the exact same...im not sure on legality but ive not noticed any difference in cooking or boiling the kettle etc...details are as follows:
          1. buy a intake for a car LPG tank from wrecker
          2. mount the bastard to your 4x4 somewhere around the back etc
          3. plumb in a 9kg etc gas bottle
          4. while your filling at a servo all looks normal but your actually filling your bbq gas bottle instead of a normal LPG one

the result is a $5 fill as opposed to a $25 + fill....
I do not do this personaly but have seen it in action and was amused! and impressed it worked.

We need someone that is expert on fuels and refining process, etc to chime in on this one.

Is the LPG that goes into cars the same as the LPG thats bought for bbq gas bottles? As I understand it, the mix/refining process varies depending on the intended use.

Prado2004 I would suggest that part of the reason that a couple of the units for sale on Ebay are dearer are that they have spent money on gaining an Australian AGA [gas] approval, Town and Country is a brand that comes to mind. The link you provided shows a heater that appears to have no relevant approval, but rather advertise an ISO and CE approvals, approvals that are about manufactureing management system [ISO] and CE being european approval , these mean jack all to a Gas appliance in Australia. Although they may look ok ,run ok initially but the fact that they are not approved means a gas/plumber is unable to install or service, and any insurance will be null n void. Being involved in Plumbing and Gas industry my suggestion is part with some more $ and get one that is approved ,not only for your safety but mainly for the safety of your family or anyone camping nearby to you .

LPG for the domestic bottle use is a mixture of Propane and Butane with the propane being the main/higher content and mixture heat value [HV] can vary. Auto gas on the other hand can also be a blend of both but is refined/manufactured to meet the National Fuel Quality Standards Act 2. It is generally higher in content of butane to produce the required octane level ie higher heating value,so will burn hotter in your BBQ if you tried it.
As for making up some adaptor to fill the BBQ bottle from the servo bowser, it can be done, you would need more than a hose adaptor ,you would need a pressure rated oneway inline valve to shut of bowser at 80percent and would not be legal or recommended.

This forum is brilliant due to the shear number of professionals opinion from almost every facet of trade....good info as usual. Kudos

                          Hello Prado2004,

Insurance should worry you. If nothing happens insurance is a waste of money, but if something goes wrong and someone looses their property or gets hurt I hope you have a few spare millions tucked away because the legal system will eat you for breakfast.

Butane, Methane and Propane are all quite different gases. Camping LPG, Car LPG and Natural gas all contain different mixes of flammable gases and should not be used in non compatible burners. They require different air / fuel ratios to burn cleanly and will produce Carbon Monoxide really easily, deadly stuff in an enclosed space. Be safe, buy the right gas burning equipment and only use them in a well ventilated space.

                          Pay insurance and sleep well.

                          regards

                          Ross

well guys after putting this to the test for 4 days solid at inskip with 4 people using it daily I can say this thing is the bees knees.

worth every $ and as it cost under $150 its a bargain. The best part about it is the automatic lighting pilot light.

                              definitely recommend!
