  • Aldi - Oricom 80ch Handheld UHF

Spotted this item in the Snow Gear May 17 Sale Catalogue.

Jumped on the Oricom website but couldn't see this model on it. Ebay has them down as model PMR790 and are around the $50 mark. Might be handy to carry a spare couple of handheld when camping for the kids...

Great value. Obviously only the basics. .5w but good for line of sight.

I managed to pick up a 2 pack last month from Supercheap Oricom PMR780 that run on 3 AAA batteries. That way I don't have to worry about recharging after the kids finish playing with them. Was only $30.

While nice and cheap for the kids to play with, I cannot recommend them for anything else. I certainly wouldn't rely on one as a back-up. I personally have had experience with 4 Oricom products. Three were UHFs I'd sold to customers and one was a cordless phone for the house. The phone lasted 6 months before packing up and two of the three UHF never saw a month of use before failing internally.

I got a cheap no name brand from Aldi earlier in the year for exactly the reasons above letting the kids play with them and not jamming the. 'Adult' channel. I put them on low power too. Only issue is they need mains charging. But can't complain for $30

I carry one of those small Can style inverters (waeco cheapy that came with a 4wd monthy sub) which are perfect for charging these sort of devices..
