  • Alice In Flood

    Hi All,

Just to show you all what it can be like in the red centre at times here are some photo's of Alice in flood.

This is the main road into Alice ie the Stuart HWY through The Gap.

Same scene from a different angle, the Todd River is on the right of the shot.

Looking south through The Gap, the train line is on the right then the Stuart HWY then the Todd River.

Todd Mall in the centre of Alice CBD.

    Looking north up Todd Mall.

Undoolya Rd foot bridge across the Todd River. My daughter's pre-school is at the end of this foot bridge.

This flood was back in the 80's but though you might be interested to see how things can get out here.

Great pics mate, I was there for that flood and all floods between '73 and '96 actually. Lived in Alice until then and then moved to the Rock for 8 years, on the Gold Coast now.

            What year was that flood?

            Hollywood.

We went to Alice Springs in 2004 (or was it 2005?) for a few weeks with the family. Drove a Falcon so didn't get off road at all. I loved the place, can't wait to get back there now I have the Prado.

Not sure how I missed these posts on this thread but anyway this is a bit of a mixture of different floods, they are of the 82 and 88 floods.

We have not seen flows like this for some time now.

and of course, the best part.......once the water subsides.....MUD!

p.s. I often hear comments from people claiming the Murray River isn't that bad - especially when they hear that i go skiing there most weekends.

Well, i must say that there never used to be a 10m wide beach at most of the popular ski spots and ramps were never left high and dry.

If only i can work out how to post images, i can show you all a shot when the level is "normal" and one "now". Scary stuff.

Before much longer - probably trade the boat for some real mud tires and go mud skiing along some spots.

                    Good Pics Mav.

Will everything be coated with a red silt for months after the flood?

Isn't it always Ben? At least it is not like the Windsor area in Western Sydney, the smell of rotting crops is truely disgusting and the stench of it gets into everything. I have lived through a few floods there and it is not pleasant at all.

Can't wait to see Alice Springs for myself. I have heard so much about the Royal Flying Doctors Service within the flying community and they have a museum there. I gotta check it out.

                            Geez Mav,

                            Amazing pics.

I was working in Alice on the new airport years ago, i think it was around 89-90, and the Todd River flowed three time within the space of about 6 months.

The locals were commenting that the normal rule of thumb was that to be recognised as a local you had to see the Todd River flow three times, usually taking many years.

Didnt see water anywhere near the volume in your pics though.

Hehehe, it is Finke time once again and once again the weather is going to be typically Finke weather. It is predicted to rain Saturday and Sunday so it is going to be another mud bath.

I knew the rain was coming as there have been flocks of Black Cockatoos everywhere and we only see them in the ten days before the rain hits.

We are heading down to Ayres Rock on Sunday just to get out of town and check out the campground facilities for next years GTG.

Talk about highway robbery on prices there though, I do not know how the tourists can afford to stay in the motels and apartments. They want like $460 per night for a standard motel room. Even the basic cabin on the campground is $150 per night and has no ensuite.
