If I wanted to drop by Wyperfeld NP fr a vist on the way through from ADL to SYD, how much time would I need to allow and what facilities are closeby as we are not at the camping stage yet?

      Hi amts

Have a look at www.pineplainslodge.com for accommodation in the Wyperfield NP. This is next door to Snowdrift. These guys are the original owners of the park and from what I've heard know alot about the area.
You probably want a good day or so in the area. We just overnighted at Snowdrift and would have liked more (as always)
Pink lakes is good at the moment. Plenty to see and do all through here
      Cheers
      Chris

The pine plains lodge is absolutely unbelivable IMO, we stopped for lunch there as we had a local (Jill Nickolls the author of Mallee Tracks) showing us around. Normally i don't think they do that sort of thing, but they invited us in and showed us around, the main dining room table is bigger than most rooms and would seat a couple of dozen people no worries. They have an observatory built from a 40ft shipping container stood up on end, outdoor eating and cooking facilities, and the workmanship in some of the construction is fantastic, mostly done in an old rustic style with lots of the timber sourced from within wyperfield.

I don't think its particularly cheap, but even still well worth whatever they charge, would be ideal for a large group (maybe a PP trip)

        Cheers Andrew

Thanks all. Will pencil in Pine Plains Lodge. Any idea what the place is going to be like in the height of the summer heat?

Hot!!! Very Hot!!! Think plus 40 in a normal summer.

It does get hot out in the Mallee, having said that we went there in the middle of February this year and we wore jeans all weekend and due to the fire ban season we were rugged up sitting around the unlit campfire at night.

I rember thinking the Lodge would be great in winter as it has a HUGE open fire place, The main building is log cabin construction and not that well sealed and i don't remember whether they had air-con or not. Might pay to enquire though as the people who run it (O'Sullivans) had 9 kids who have all left home so they have many spare rooms in their house next door, which they often let out when they are busy and the lodge is full.

just went and checked my photos, note the evaporative air-con on the roof of the lodge.

It will all depend on the forecast leading up to your trip, no fun out in that country if its a stinker.

              Cheers Andrew
