  • Watagan Mountains

Located about an hour North of Sydney, the Watagan Mountains is a great place to spend a weekend. Everything from easy tracks through to winch and locker territory, this area has something for everyone. A number of great camping areas, picnic grounds, scenic lookouts and just a short drive from the townships of Cooranbong and Morisset. I have just spent the last couple of days playing in the mud after a few days of rain and have had a ball.

The Watagans are my mates and my favourite destination if we want a quick/easy get-away for a night or just a day. We've probably been there close to a dozen times between us. There are plenty of tracks of all degrees of difficulty, right up to the extreme level.

There are lots and lots of dirt bikers and also hunters at night... so it's advisable to stick to the campgrounds if staying over night.

I think these are the co-ordinates -33.131552,151.378874 of the section of Lemon Tree Rd which has ended many of our trips... it's a mud mauler's heaven! I almost went looking for a bridge to jump off one day when I saw two comp trucks almost destroy themselves on it but then two Pajero Io's with traction control just waltzed straight through it - I was flabbergasted to say the least, it goes to show that 4WDing is about brains not brawn.

      It's often deep and soft:

I had a go but slid off the high points and bellied out very quickly:

Wrotten little bugger that waltzed through it:

One of my favourite spots and only a short drive from home. Finally found my old topo's after the house a couple of years ago and have been wondering what some of the tracks would now be like now. It has been a few years since I have had a good run up there.

Having some fun in my old Prado.
