I first went to Five Rocks as a boy with my uncle and his mates who were some of the first to build on the land now known as the Stockyard Point settlement. It was a small limited release of then very remote leasehold land that many years later went freehold. The land went for a song and would now be worth a fortune. I returned with my sons some 25 years later along the tracks he helped to carve out.
This was the place that inspired me to purchase my Prado and take a real interest in Four Wheel Driving. Your description of it is spot on. Fraser may have its lakes but the point dividing the beaches and the natural beauty of the place can only be appreciated by being there.
Five Rocks is where I learnt to catch beach worms and catch fish, ride an ATV and really appreciate the importance of saying to your uncle that "I hope we get stuck" on the way back because I just didn't want to leave, then only for it to happen in a swollen creek crossing!! Geeze that expanded my vocabulary.
Camping on the beach dunes is the only way to do it. Most of the beach is still under mining lease.
It was dry when we went and the spectacular waterfall which once gushed almost straight onto the beach was just a trickle. People with no respect for the place had in parts left their rubbish and worse, their toilet waste to spoil this wonderful part of the Queensland coast.
We spent a week in behind the dunes, took our rubbish and more importantly took memories that will last another 25 years. It also allowed me to give a piece of my childhood to my two sons. Our highlight was watching a small pod of whales perform for us at the bottom of the point on the day we left. They were so close we could almost touch them.
When time permits I'll return.
