  • Beautiful destinations in SA

Hi Prado Point Community, I'm new here and need your help...
I recently purchased a 120 series Prado and want to make a great first impression on the wife about this whole "4wd' experience thing. Can anyone help me out with beautiful/favourite destinations ideally within 4 or 5hrs drive of Adelaide?
I have two small kids, an offroad camper and 3-4 days leave up my sleeve. So where to...???
Avoiding all eye contact I shamefully stare down at my muddy feet and softly announce... "My name is Dale and I am a 4WD accessories addict".

There is a publication put out by the advertiser available at newsagents titled 4WDSA. It covers all parts of the state and gives suggestions of what size 4wd is needed as well as difficulty of the terrain and ability of the driver
It also gives ideas of recovery gear you may need and safety tips.
Our 6 year old and 3 year old try their hardest to make sure there is no time or money for the other baby

So if you're trying to impress the kids / wife for the first time, this is what I would do. 1) ensure that you go somewhere with facilities like showers, toilets. Asking the wife to pee in a bucket first time won't go down too well :-). Also, do something that is interesting for the kids, and somewhere that you can stop plenty of times for them to run around.

Two places spring to mind for this. First place is Beachport like has already been mentioned. You can stay in a caravan park and do day trips out into the dunes. Just take a shovel, air compressor and tyre gauge. You should be right between Beachport and Nora Creina on your own and there is usually people around should you need a bit of a tow. Lunch by the ocean goes down well with the kids and wife usually.

Second place is Bendleby Ranges. It is bush camping but they have toilets and showers. There's also plenty of tracks from easy to hard, and plenty of wildlife etc for the kids to get out and see. Both of these places are within 4 hours of adelaide and four days is plenty for both of them.

          Best of luck.
          Ian.

Another nice place is the coorong. Will give you abit of 4wding, nothing to hard but still gives yyou a good feel for it. 42 mile crossing is nice but just make sure you stick to the track's.
If you do head down that way a good place to stay is Gemini downs, nothing flash basically a paddock with a toilet and shower block. You can camp anywhere in the paddock so you wont be next to anyone but you still have the toilets etc to keep everyone happy.

Hi Outback Jack, we are heading to Beachport this weekend and staying at the caravan park. If you want to tag along along through the tracks you are more than welcome. you cant miss us in the caravan park...just listen out for the 5 screaming giggling girls and the two husbands and wives yelling at them to keep the noise down!

I was going to mention these two. Ian has done it and I certainly agree.

Thanks one and all for the swift responses. Would never have truely appreciated the significance of the toilet block but now that you all point it out it seems an absolute necessity, particularly on the families maiden voyage! I think I might head toward BeachPort. A cosy powered site, warm showers and clean toilets. I grew up in the south east and have spent many a summer between Beachport and Robe but it would still be new to the wife and kids. Unfortunately I can't get down there this weekend though Smickbus but thank-you so much for the invite.

I cant wait to get out and amoungst it and will keep an eye out for SA gatherings of others from Prado Point. I have so much to learn and this forum seems to offer so many answers.

                  Thanks again guys...

Additionally, you may want to keep an eye out of any of our local day trips or weekenders and tag along on one of those. There are usually a bunch of kids in tow from varying families, variety of people with a wide range of experiences and abilities.

If you just want a shortish day trip from Adelaide - Goolwa beach is great, can even go all the way to the Murray Mouth for a bit more of a challenge.

Try this site for short day trips. It works for all over Australia with reviews and track conditions. All you need to do is type in a postcode.
