  • Is the Border Track any place for a Nissan Xtrail?

Not having done this run before, a mate and I have been talking about a boys weekend away taking in the sights, sounds and challenges of the Border Track. One of the blokes that would come along would need to get a Nissan X-trail down the border track. Not a great deal of clearance but he would be travelling with other vehicles including my 120 series and a 100 series cruiser. What do we all think?
Avoiding all eye contact I shamefully stare down at my muddy feet and softly announce... "My name is Dale and I am a 4WD accessories addict".

I have done the trip a few times now and I reckon an xtrail would be fine. where the harder sections are there are chicken tracks so if he can't get over or through they are always an option. We have put xtrails through alot harder than the border track

Easy mate. Can't think of any section an xtrail won't get through.

You can always burn it on the camp fire if you get bored.

Have done this trip a number of times. Its a fantastic weekend away. Not sure of your mates choice of transport but will depended on the weather. At the start of the southern leg of the track ( Pinnaroo down) there's a fair bit of sand that is very soft when dry. There are a few chicken tracks around the dunes but will still need some clearance under any bus, but is Very easy when wet. We camped at Red Bluff, Its the best camp site on the track. From here continue south and the dunes only get bigger ;-D alot of fun. After a few kms it will flaten out, but if wet very slippery and Muddy, there's chicken tracks around most of the holes. Last trip i distroyed the bash plate on my 90's. Dont let me talk you out of it, it's a easy trip depending on weather. Have some footage on you tube of the last trip there about 8 months ago, have a look, you want be disapointed with this adventure

An X trail will probably do it if they choose what they do and don't tackle. The biggest problem will be the ruts up the bigger dunes around Centre Track. Some of these ruts are probably deeper than the clearance of an Xtrail, so it may bottom out, which could cause damage. You can take the easier tracks around these. The other issue would be spiking a tyre, assuming that the Xtrail is running passenger construction. Concentration when driving will help to avoid the mallee roots that will destroy tyres.

Have done the border track a couple of times it is good fun. It's a bit sad to see people digging up the track because it is more fun to dig holes and damage the track than let a bit of air out so others can enjoy the drive

I agree with u footoo & fishfinder. U can clearly hear me in the back ground telling him to lower his pressure. But unfortunately there is always one that thinks traction control is the answer over good preparation. I was the first up in my 90 and walked up it with the right pressures. All the best with your trip outback jack

The short answer is yes. There is always a need to backfill the ruts and an xtrail is as good as any other rubble for doing this

Thanks for the feedback men. Sounds like the general consensus is with other vehicles in support the xtrail should get through however if he gets really stuck then we're best to just leave him there This boys trip should be a heap of fun... 4wd, swag, campire and cold beer... cant beat it!

AOJ, as long as you take your Prado and a snatch strap it will be all good.
PS take a camera, everyone will have a larf at the photos of the xtrail being recovered/used too lessen any stepups/being overtaken by Ferozas etc etc.

Prado Community, The trip is planned for the 19th of May. The idea is to head up to Pinnaroo before heading south and camping at Red Bluff. The question that I have for you all is... Is there much driving after Red Bluff? Are there alternative tracks that we can take that will give us some good driving in the morning before hitting the tarmac and heading home in the afternoon?
