  • Cape York June-July 2008

There seems to be few people who are heading up the Cape around this time.
I thought I would start this thread so we could see who is going, and maybe collect knowledge that will benefit all of us.

I have been twice before (15 years apart). Both times were in late August early September. If anyone has thoughts on road and river condtions from earlier they would be most appreceited!

So far its the yl and me, some friends from Melbourne in a 120 series, another friend in a 100 series and maybe the inlaws also in a 100 series.

We plan to do the Cape To Cape. From the southern most road in Australia, at Cockle Creek in Tassie to the top.

    All comments welcomed!

I will be doing the Cape somewhere between June and September. At this point we still have not set a firm date. Maybe this thread will help.
      cheers

No worries....When I went to Cape York from Wagga, it took us 6 weeks. That also included a week at Fraser on the way back.

We only drove during the day & had 2 days at Weipa & 5 days or so at the top.

Your Cape to Cape idea has me interested....as I always wanted to visit Tasmania & return to Cape York. Maybe somehow the two can in fact be combined?

June - July is the busy time for the Cape, so you should have lots of people to talk too. It is also fabulous weather with little chance of rain and day time temps sunny and ideal.
Sounds like the planning of a great trip.
Trust me it will be one of your best.
Unfortunately most people who go once usually have to go back again cause they had such a good time.
          Cheers

By all means stormy come on down!
The drive to Cocle creek is a bit over an hour from Hobart.
We will probably make it a fairly fast trip up to Cairns due to the work thing.
Maybe up the New England highway as we have done the coastal route many times.

Up for new way from Cairns on. Last time we went thruogh Battle Camp and laura to Musgrave. Then pretty much the standard route. We did Vrylia Point which was great.
Thinking this time we might go up the east coast a bit furtherbefore coming across. Cape Melville??
then up for any ideas after that. Just going the same is fine with us ass the season will be different and we think that this will make a difference.
As for the Cape to Cape thing, just a bit of a gimmick to make it a bit more fun. We have made a 23 minute video of our last trip and would like to make a better one this time. Experience is a great thing!!

Last time I went to the cape we came back through Cape Melville and down the Starke. There is some nice spots to see on the way and that time of the year shouldn't be too bad. Out to Bathurst Heads is scenic and you pass the turn off to Pandanus palms where the vietnam vets hangout. We didnt go in because we are not vets but some of the PP people might qualify.
From Bathurst Heads along to Bathurst Bay the road is still pretty navigatable. Although the bulldust in some of the creek crossings is bad.
Amout mid way along is about as bad as it gets, but it does stay like that for a while.
Several times the bulldust was over the bumper bar on the old Lux.
We were there in Sept, so cant tell you how the road would be in June/July but should be OK, depending on the wet and how late it is.
The road is only a couple of hundred clicks long but will take most of the day to transgress.

                  Sounds good.
Lots of people in the NT have that kind of setup as the roads are a lot better up there.
I was amazed at the elaborate camp sites they have compared to the Cape.

June/July is great, but actually the best weather is Aug/Sept with clear blue skies almost guaranteed.

The roads are best just after grading which usually occurs in May. I expect a big wet this year so May is not a choice I would go for. I will be there in July and Sept. I'll keep a look out for Prados.

Another one here for May/June/July. No firm dates yet, see what happens with the Wet.

                      We'll be 1 x Prado and 1 x GU Patrol.

A convoy of Prado's would be great to see up the Cape... Bring it on!
