We headed up over the end of June/start of July. Was lake Mackenzie still flooded when you were there? I was a little disappointed considering all the hype. It really is a great place to visit, especially at this time of year to avoid the crowds, that is if you are happy to sacrifice a bit of warmer weather and swimming. Still warmer than Canberra though!

From Orchard beach it took us about an hour, most of the time was going through Nagkala and around rocks, on the way back was a little quicker as the tide was out and less rocks that we had to go over/ around.

Haha, yes the fish was hooked through the Tail!!!

Lake Mackenzie was accessable down to the beach but very high water line, more than usual. The one that we went to that was really bad was lake Allam, could not get along the boardwalk to the steps to see the turtles.

                    Hi Hutch

The wife and I are heading to Carree camp area on the northern tip of Fraser in a month's time. Any issues with getting around Nagkala rocks or other spots. I was debating taking my box trailer which has plenty of ground clearance and will only be lightly loaded (I dont have a roof rack) but am worried about the sand tracks near Nagkala and deep/steep spots which the standard trailer coupling might not like!.

Ngkala changes every time I go their, this time we were doing it easy at 24psi high range, I have been there with 14psi and struggled, the track has changed in that now it is a bit more windy and difficult but we had rain every day we were there so the tracks were hard. Towing a trailer through could be possible if the the sand is hard, the other issues are not at south ngkala bit further up as u can only get around the rocks at low tide and if u have to go over them like we did it was low range and maxtrax to get through.
If u don't really need the trailer I would leave it at home.

I'm going up there at the end of November before the school holidays start. Has to be better than last January when a low developed off the island and it rained and blew a gale every day we were there. Can't wait!!

Ok thanks Hutch, appreciate that. I'll leave the trailer home.

Did you need the maxtrax because it wasnt low tide?

No other vehicles, travelling with the wife. I havent had trouble in soft sand before but Ngkala has a reputation for being pretty soft - the auto v6 is pretty good in the sand and I now have a bit more clearance with better suspension. I'll hop out and have a look at the start and make sure its clear of bogged vehicles.
