  • Border Ranges

Just thought I'd share my experiences during the trip to the Border Ranges my family and I made on the weekend (17-18 Nov).

We followed the recommend route set out in Brad McCarthy's book, "Dirty Weekends". We have done a couple of the trips set out in this book and I would highly recommend it.

Leaving from Beaudesert we headed towards Kyogle and into the National Park. The facilities along the way are fantastic. Most lookouts have tables and wood fired bbq's (with wood being supplied at most) together with toilets.

We camped at Forest Tops Camping Ground which is a couple of hours from Beaudesert. It's a beautiful grassed area in the rain forrest. It has toilets, a covered communal kitchen (with wood fire) and about 3-4 spots with there own bench and wood fired bbq. Again, heaps of wood supplied. There are no shower facilities here though.

Notwithstanding it was the middle of November it was pretty cold in the night getting down into the single figures I would suggest. Being a clear night and away from the 'light' pollution, the stars were amazing.

But even more amazing were the birds at about 4.10am!! I'm sure some of them had a PA system and were having a laugh at my expense when they started calling at first light. I couldn't believe they could generate so much noise.

We left about 10.00am and finished the balance of the trip set out in Brad's book. Of the most picturesque places was the bridge crossing at Brindle Creek and the Pinnacle Lookout (which is only about a 200mt walk through the rainforest).

We had a tight time frame and didn't stop as often as you probably could and finished up at Natural Arch about 2.30pm.

About half the route is on unsealed roads which don't require a 4WD.

If your just looking at getting away for a day or so, it's well worth the trip and beats sitting on your backside at home.

      As hutch said... any pics??

Trying to do as many of those trips as I can at the moment. Although I seem to be developing a habit of doing them in the reverse direction  ... which doesn't help my navigator/better half one bit ops:

Those birds sure do start early don't they... or do we just start late
      Cheers, Leon

I've got a couple of pics but they don't do the place justice. I'm in the process of trying to organise getting some webspace to post them anyway and will update the post as soon as I can.

We have spent the last week holidaying at Kingscliff (it's a tough life!) and one day decided that we would also set off to to Border Ranges Nat Park. We have done all the raods in the area several times on the bikes, but of course we hadn't been offroad yet! When we got there, unfortunately the road was closed between Sheepstation Creek and Forest Tops (from the Kyogle end), so we drove as far as we could until we met the grader team. Then we were going to go in from the Murwillumbah end, but we managed to find some fun detours after driving out of the park before getting to the main road.

A couple of days later we took off to Nightcap National Park & Whian Whian SCA, which also had some good tracks, most of which an AWD would manage nicely, barring one or two rocky sections. The 4WD only tracks were closed though!

We hope to get back down there again soon to do the Border Ranges Track, and camp overnight.
"It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses...Hit it!"

Great Post. I have relatives at Kyogle and relatives at Murwillumbah, but I have never heard of this "trip". Could be time to visit the relos again.

                    Cheers - Byrnsie
