  • Quick 4WD escape on the Gold Coast

Does anyone have a favourite weekend escape close to the Gold Coast that has a good mix of beginner to intermediate 4wd and camping?

Get yourself a copy of the "Dirty Weekends in South East Queensland" book. Written by the guy who owns maxtrax and a really good set of easy to medium tracks all over south east Queensland. I've done a few and his directions and descriptions of waypoints are spot on. Also plenty of campsites listed for each.

Yep a great guide... Getting harder to find now as stocks are low. Have a look around the 4wd & camping shops and you might find one on the shelf. Shortly will be released as an app which will be even better.

Thanks guys...I'll take a look for it. I think I did one of the tracks a few years ago from that book with some mates through the Border Ranges. Do you guys have a favourite? I'm looking to heading off from the GC mid morning Saturday with the camper trailer for a night. Cheers!

          Hi Hoofy.

As mentioned there are quite a few nice day/weekend trips from the Goldy in the Dirty Weekends book.

The Condamine River one may suit you well although since the recent rains the crossings may be deep from what I read.

We are off to North Straddie this weekend for an overnighter.

What area of he Goldy do you live in?

Thanks gumboot...I'll check them out too.

DSS150 - I'm down in Currumbin mate so it's just as easy to go over the border. I haven't been to the Condamine River yet but think that with the recent rain, the fact that I'm new to 4WD and will be towing my camper, and the Hilux doesn't have a snorkel on it might mean I'll lock in a safer bet this time around. Have fun up on North Straddie.

You could do the border ranges run in reverse? Brindle creek is in there and it is lovely, especially after a bit of rain, not to mention the falls on the Qld side of the border.

Watch out for leeches, not problem just take some salt and expect to remove a few.

Murwillumbah into the forest then out along the Lions Rd, few gentle creek crossings and back to Boonah and across. But as everyone has said buy the dirty weekends book as there are lots of nice tracks in the area.

Thanks! Yeah that's what I'm thinking...might even get a swim in with all the recent rain. Unless of course it looks like a cracking beach weekend...then I might have to stay closer to the coast!

Nice photo...did you take that yourself?

Yes pic is one of a few that I get along the way. Had to stand in the water (don't tell the Rangers) and wedge the camera on a rock (don't tell the Rangers). Cost me 487 leeches though.

I'm not far from you in Burleigh, we should organise a day/weekend trip sometime.

We are keen to do the Condamine once the water levels are lower, maybe early Autumn sometime.

Go onto 4x4earth and check out the tracks around Boonah. They'd be fairly close to you. There's enough around there to keep you entertained for a day. To find a location to drive to in order to find the tracks, you can zoom in and find a crossroad somewhere on the plotted course and then punch it into your satnav.

Ill keep an eye on this thread.
